President signs food security ordinance

New Delhi, Jul 5 (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee Friday promulgated the national food security ordinance, which aims to provide subsidised food grain to around 67 percent of India's 1.2 billion people.

The measure is expected to be a game-changer for the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, coming ahead of the polls to five state assemblies this year-end, and the general elections of 2014.

The food security bill, one of the big-ticket welfare initiatives of the UPA and a pet project of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, is expected to provide subsidised food grains to around 800 million people.

This would entail an initial cost of around Rs.1.3 lakh crore to the government.

The government, which is in minority and is surviving on outside support, skipped a debate in parliament by issuing the ordinance, and invited the ire of the opposition parties who slammed the government for demeaning parliament.

While the step has sparked off speculation over early polls, some reports have also said the announcement was made as upcoming assembly polls may be announced soon and the model code of conduct would have created a hurdle, as it prohibits the government from announcing any big policy initiative that could impact voting.

Thanks to the Congi president -

Congress has one more scam added to their kitty .

We already have schemes PDS,MNREGA etc which have not been implemented correctly and are not benefitting the target audience .

Those who are commenting this to be a good scheme here will soon get the good news of additional taxes which will eventually have a trail to 10 janpath.

Pity that people have been fooled in the garb of this welfare scheme.

I do not care which govt. had introduced this BIll - food security ordinance, which aims to provide subsidised food grain to around 67 percent of India's 1.2 billion people.
What as a citizen of this Country, required is every Indian should have minimum 2 meal per day. Let the political parties keep their politics in their own back yard.

We were really sad, to watch when the nation suffered Himalaya Tsunami and more than 10,000 people have died, it was Indian army with the help of local police and with the help of volunteers evacuated the people who have been affected more than 1.1 lakh people. But the sad part is, the political parties including fake Modi wanted to get credit. Fake Modi, because he said, he had evacuated 15,000 Gujarathi's on a single day.

We are glad for this Food Security Bill and hats off to the leader who had seen that this Bill has been passed. Hope they will implement and every Indian will reap this benefit.

Why now Congress on 10 year of their funeral time realising Food Security bill. Why they are showing to the world that we are a Poor country, in reality we are not. If these political goons given us good governance with honesty the country would have reached to its highest peak par with China. Look at our Indians who are leaving outside India mostly are businessmen or empolyed having a good life style. Congress or BJP or any other party please note "Public sub kuch jantha hai" how long these politicians will fool our country? God save India.

US is the largest economy which is running into a deficit of trillions of dollars!!no harm in having a deficit to me its a sign of a progressive state. India is growing at a good pace so whats the worry all about. Most of the economies which have surplus are suffering more like ex JAPAN ..

To compare US to India and say "deficits are ok" is preposterous ! US has a distinct advantage over every other nation in the world because US dollar is the global reserve currency. So US can sustain deficits for much much longer than any other nation.

India on the other hand risks further devaluation of rupee and a greater inflation if it continues on the path of deficits. I cannot believe people here think it is a good idea to increase expenditures when the nation is in such dire financial condition..

I am not denying that part boss. Yes at the end of the whatever is good for people is good for country, no second thoughts about it. Regarding Political gimmick, Yes congress is another political party they have to play politics to stay or get power again, even BJP may during pre election stages get out all these packages, how much ever it materializes or works is different thing. Of course as aimed it may help them to get number, no doubt.
But the sad part of India is Middle class is not at all taken into considerations by any Govt either in their pre-poll scheme or post. We atleast hope the stranded food grains which is rotting all over the country reaches the needed.

The naivety of some of the comments here never seizes to amaze me ! Government, and government of any country for that matter does not "earn" its income. It needs to tax its citizens and use that money for its expenditures. Government of India has a near 7% budgetary deficit, the current account deficit has balooned resulting in rupee losing 52% of its value since 2008. And yet instead of cutting down on expenditures, they go on increasing it!

There is a saying among liberatarian economists that Governments needs to take it from Paul to give it to Peter. Meaning, they need to increase the taxation on others for these entitlement campaigns. People never learn. How did the 2Rs rice, 1 Rs milk, rationing system etc end up ? As the country goes deeper into debt, the government keeps spending money which is not theirs to spend.

Let it be vote bank politics but atleast poor will get food. BJP did it also in chatisgarh and did it well also. This is just extending it to the entire nation. There are state like TN/Orissa also doing well in this area. Its now time we make it a national agenda to eliminate poverty and become a developed nation

If you think it is politically motivated and vote bank politics, so be it. Congress is doing something good for the poor and for the less fortunate, hence they deserve the right to demand vote from you. As for farmers and business people, isn't government spending 1.3 lakhs crores from its exchequer. So the farmers will get their fair share and so for the business community. I think there is nothing wrong in this deal. If some other political party has some better ideas I am all for it. We want this kind of competition from the political parties which wiil benefit the people, society and the nation.
