Seven killed in Iraq attacks

Baghdad, Jul 17 (IANS): At least seven people were killed and 10 wounded Tuesday in separate militant attacks in Iraq'a capital city, police said.

Two soldiers and four gunmen were killed in Sunni-dominated Salahudin province after a fierce clash erupted when gunmen attacked an Iraqi army checkpoint in Baiji city, some 220 km from Baghdad, reported Xinhua citing a provincial source.

In a separate incident, a civilian was killed and nine wounded when one of the eight mortar rounds, apparently targeting a nearby army base, missed its target and landed on their house outside Hamam al-Alil town in Mosul, some 400 km from Baghdad, said a police source.

Separately, a policeman was wounded when gunmen blew up four improvised explosive devices planted in a watch tower of a joint police and army checkpoint in Mosul, the source added.
