Conspiracy on to dismiss my government: Mamata

Kolkata, July 27 (IANS): Targeting the central agencies, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday said a conspiracy has been hatched to dismiss her government and threatened of grave consequences if anything was done to destabilise her regime.

Banerjee said as her government was performing well, there were efforts to create fresh disturbances in the northern hills of Darjeeling and Junglemahal - comprising West Midnapore, Bankura and Birbhum districts - where the Maoist ultras once had a solid base.

Speaking during a special session of the state assembly, the chief minister said the central agencies were being used to foment trouble. "A conspiracy has been drawn to dismiss my government. But the consequences would be grave."

Targeting Minister of State for Railways and Murshidabad district Congress president Adhir Chowdhury, she said the minister had acted like a hoodlum during the panchayat polls in the district.

Citing statistic, Banerjee claimed that the panchayat polls were held in a more peaceful manner than during elections held under the previous Left Front regime.

She said while nine people were killed in the village council polls this year, 40 people had perished in 2003 and 35 in 2008. She said in 2008, there were 159 violent incidents associated with the polls, the number came down to 98 this year.

Meanwhile, amid a boycott by the opposition Left Front and the Congress, the state assembly passed the West Bengal Appropriation Bill 2013 and the West Bengal VAT Amendment Bill.
