Srinagar, July 27 (IANS): A Border Security Force (BSF) trooper was injured Saturday evening when Pakistan troopers violated the ceasefire on the international border in Hiranagar sector of Kathua district in Jammu region.

Police sources told IANS that Pakistan troops resorted to unprovoked firing at Indian positions in Hiranagar sector of the international border in Kathua district of Jammu region Saturday evening.

"Initial reports have said one BSF trooper was injured when Pakistan troops fired at our positions in Hiranagar sector of the international border.

"The fire was returned and the exchange of fire is still continuing in the area," a senior police officer told IANS.

A ceasefire agreement signed by India and Pakistan in 2003 has brought in a modicum of normalcy in the lives of thousands of people living on the two sides of the international border and the Line of Control (LoC) in Indian- and Pakistan-administered parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

Intelligence agencies hold that Pakistan troops have been violating the bilateral ceasefire to provide cover to heavily armed guerrillas so that they can sneak into the Indian side of the borders in Jammu and Kashmir.
