Prime accused in Gurgaon gang-rape arrested

Gurgaon, July 29 (IANS): The prime accused in the gang-rape of two Delhi-based women in a moving car last month has been arrested, police said Monday. Six accused were arrested earlier.

"Vikram was the mastermind in the case. He was the one who hired out the car to the victims and after that called his other accomplices," Crime Branch official Yashwant Singh told IANS.

Vikram was arrested from his home village, Nangal Pita in Haryana's Mahendergarh district.

"After the incident in Gurgaon June 27, he had taken shelter in a religious shrine in Sirsa district. He was sure that he would elude police. He took a room near the shrine on rent and planned to live there with his wife. He came to his village to get his wife Sunday night and was arrested,"

He said Vikram had a criminal record, having been arrested in a drug supplying racket and remaining in jail for months.

"We are interrogating him after taking him on one day police remand," the officer said.

Two Delhi-based women were gang-raped in a moving car early June 27 while returning home from a pub, police said.

The two women had hired a car outside the Sahara Mall for Rs.300 to go to Tughlaqabad area in south Delhi. The driver, however, let two other men into the car.

The car was then diverted to the Gurgaon-Faridabad road where the men gang-raped them in the moving car for some hours.

All this while four friends of the accused followed their car in another vehicle, police said.

The women were later dumped on the Gurgaon-Faridabad road. The victims then contacted police.

Four cab drivers, arrested by the evening same day, were identified as Devender, Promod, Haneesh Khan and Satish. Another accused, also named Devender, was also arrested. Dhramveer alias Dharma, the main accomplice of Vikram, was arrested June 29.

All the accused were cab drivers basically from different cities but living in Nathupur village area in rented accommodations.
