Additional paramilitary forces sent to Andhra Pradesh


New Delhi, July 29 (IANS): The central government has sent additional companies of paramilitary forces to Andhra Pradesh to deal with any law and order situation if a decision is taken on the contentious issue of creating a separate state of Telangana.

Informed sources said that the home ministry has sent about 10 companies of paramilitary forces in addition to the forces already in the state to assist in the task of maintaining peace.

They said the additional forces are likely to be deployed in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions where protests could erupt if a decision is taken in favour of creating Telangana state by bifurcating the state.

The demands for creating Telangana are expected to be discussed at the meeting of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Tuesday. A meeting of Congress Working Committee is also slated later in the day.

There are divisions in the Congress on the issue with its leaders in Andhra Pradesh split on the demand for creating a separate state.

The sources said that 25 companies of paramilitary forces had already been placed at the disposal of the state government to help deal with any protests .

Home ministry officials are in regular touch with state government officials and have asked them to ensure peace in the state amid signals that a decision could be taken on Telangana.

Sources said the central government has assured Andhra Pradesh government of all possible central help in maintaining law and order in the state.
