New Delhi, July 30 (IANS): The BJP Tuesday described the Congress decision to form a separate state of Telangana as the victory of the region's people and said it will carefully watch if the intention is to "backstab or give Telangana".
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said his party has consistently backed the decision to form a separate Telangana and was ready to back a bill on separate statehood if the government brings it in the monsoon session of parliament.
He said the Congress had also promised statehood to Telangana in 2004 and its government had announced the start of the process to form a separate state in 2009 but had gone back on it.
"The Congress' words can be welcomed only when they turn into reality," he said.
"They (the people of Telangana) waited for nine years. Today, if the government has agreed to the demand, it is due to public pressure, sacrifice by people and pressure of pro-Telangana parties," he said.
"We will see carefully (if) the intention is to backstab or to give Telangana. We will watch till Telangana is formed," he said.
