BHOPAL, Aug 5 (Agencies) : A newborn was allegedly smashed to death on the floor by a midwife at a government hospital in Morena district of MP after the child's father failed to give Rs 500 as neg (gift traditionally given to midwives on birth of a child).

Sanju Rathore (24), resident of Badokhar village, delivered a baby boy at a district hospital on Friday. According to her husband Sanjay, a midwife — who got angry when she was denied Rs 500 — threw the baby on the floor, killing him on the spot. She ran out of the hospital after the incident, the father alleged.

However, Sanju had a different version. "The midwife pushed me from the bed as we could not give the money she demanded," she said. Doctors allege the baby died of an infection. The body has been sent for autopsy. Sanjay said he first went to the police post on the hospital premises with his son's body and tried to lodge a complaint. But a cop referred him to Kotwali police station. The administration has ordered a probe into the charges.
