Udupi, Jan 30: Laboratory equipments worth more than 15,000 perished in a fire mishap in the Science Lab of the Yermal High School near Padubidri here on Monday January 30 morning.
Two young men Sanjay and Dharmaraj who had come for jogging in the morning saw fire emanate from the school building. They immediately informed the gram panchayat president Satish Salian. Then, with the help of the locals, broke open the school doors and extinguished the fire with water.
But several lab equipments such as jars were destroyed by the time fire was extinguished. Right now, the loss has tentatively been placed around Rs 15,000.
However, the cause of fire has not been ascertained. The school had not opened for the day and therefore there was nobody in the lab. Though it is presumed that the fire might have been caused by some chemical spilling or coming into contact with air, it is yet to be established.
