Rahul's poverty remark draws flak

Lucknow, Aug 6 (IANS): Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi came in for sharp criticism Tuesday for saying that poverty was a "state of mind".

Political leaders here said the statement made in Allahabad showed how much the Gandhi scion was cut off from the ground reality.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Uttar Pradesh spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said Gandhi's statement smacked of arrogance.

"This is not only sad but also makes mockery of the poor," Pathak told IANS.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui said the Congress leader was ignorant and did not know the ground situation.

"He comes from a billionaire family and many generations in the Gandhi Nehru family have not seen poverty even from a distance. So they cannot be blamed for their poor knowledge," he said.

Speaking at a discourse on 'Culture, Deepening Democracy and Most Marginalised Communities', organised by social scientist Badri Narayan Monday, Gandhi had said that poverty was a state of mind.

"Poverty is just a state of mind. It does not mean the scarcity of food, money or material things. If one possesses self-confidence, then one can overcome poverty," Gandhi was quoted as saying by the organisers.

Going further, Gandhi cited the example of a poor woman in Amethi who took control of her life, both financially and socially, by getting associated with a self-help group, Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojana.

This is the same philosophy followed by great countries like Japan.
They are such a small country and look at them. I am sure if some country nukes India we would be just sitting and blaming COngress and BJP. Anna hazare would be still fasting and doing nothing.
The whole point of what Rahul Gandhi is saying is pull up your sleeve and work hard, Have less kids and support the country. Country will not always feed you.
In the same time country should educate the people and give them medical advice about contraseptives.
Go to any BPL family and check how many kids they have! Then you will get it.

Old timers like me would remember that the current team under Sonia's leadership were all those whom Indira and Rajiv utterly disliked. Digvijay Singh, Mani Shankar Aiyar, Ambika Soni , Arjun Singh are close confidants of Sonia
today are the same folks that Rajiv deeply disliked.

Rahul Gandhi has a checkered past. His ping out of Harvard due to drug related problems, his obscure life until he was pushed into the spotlight as the new Congress scion , and his total incompetence and unprepardness to lead a national party, lack of any administration skills etc shows in his repeated silly commments. I hope the 2014 elections will bring a much needed change to our country which is fast sinking thanks to our political class.

Corruption and Caste are the two major evils in our society in which the former can be eliminated by good governance and the latter can only be corrected by bringing in equality.
Over the last 67 years of India's Independence, the word poverty has always been used as a tool, vote-bank or simply an excuse for their corrupt state of affairs, and not the other way round.
What differentiates India from other corrupt nations is the sickening caste factor. That's why, for those countries it is much more easier to tackle the issue of poverty than in our case where caste and inequality has become hindrance to eliminate corruption and poverty.
During my childhood and even today, I have seen the so-called upper caste people denying the basic rights of lower caste and the untouchables, their children cannot go to school, both mother and father are forced to work in masters house. This kind of slavery exists even today. These are the major chunk of 300 million plus BPL people who are forced into 'poverty state of mind'. Lucky are those who escaped from their clutches and fled to urban areas where atleast their kids could prosper in life.

90 percent of readers in DW commented as though Rahul Gandhi had said a blunder! It is pure ignorance of the reality, and selfishness! If there are still poor people in India, it is because of our selfishness. Do any one think, India don't have enough resources to alleviate poverty in this country? The wealth is accumulated by some 100 people which are enough for eradicating all poverty. And we scream for the poor. We are responsible for the situation. Unless the poor realize their rights, spend less on alcohol, and develop a "favorable state of mind" with social empowerment, these poor will be always with us and we will escape our responsibility by passing comments in favor of them. Mere stupidity. Rahul said the right thing. He has a vision for the country, even if he is rich.

Many things are in reality are states of mind only. ...including prosperity. But Rahul Gandhi who is born in a 'royal'family(Indian)will not know what poverty is all about. Financial needs are important for any one. Without money one can not live here. Sincerely, Rahul has not understood this. I think therefore this statement. Personally I have observed those who are really prosperous have a mind of a pauper! and vice versa too.

I fully agree with his statement "poverty is state of mind". It is true that we have had corrupt governance since Independence, ruled by corrupt parties and politicians resulting in inequality and widened disparity in our society at large.
But if you go back in time and try to analyse a bit, most of us had nothing more than 2 square meals a day (hard earned), no extra clothes, no luxuries, no extra money to spend. Thanks to our religious and charitable organizations who opened schools in every village. Now that so much has changed in our lives that our status has gradually changed from economically low to lower middle class and to middle class. Education has played an important role and opportunities aplenty.
I remember families in our neighborhood (obviously lower caste) who were poor just like us, remained poor as we grew and they are poor even today. Now who should be blamed for this? Didn't they get enough opportunities just like many of us or you want to put the blame always only on political parties or is it not the suppression from the so called brahminical class?

"Poverty is just a state of mind. It does not mean the scarcity of food, money or material things. If one possesses self-confidence, then one can overcome poverty," Rahul Gandhi mocks the poor, says poverty is just a state of mind...good joke from a BHUDU ... First, Congress leaders Raj Babbar Farook and Rasheed Masood mocked the poor by their Rs.12 and Rs.5 & 1 for a meal remarks. Now, it's none other than the Gandhi scion who has come out with his own, bizarre definition of poverty.......DONT WORRY BUDHU NEXT ELECTION PUBLIC WILL SHOW YOU RIGHT definition for poverty.

Rahul is right in what he said. In India, the poverty conditions are caused by an unjust political and social system. If one has the will power, he can defeat poverty. What is needed is a social empowerment. By giving Rice for One Rupee, or speaking for the poor, poverty cannot be alleviated.
