Controversy erupts over Antony statement that terrorists behind LoC attack

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI): Defence Minister A K Antony's statement on killing of five Indian soldiers in Poonch today sparked of a controversy because he described the intruders as "terrorists along with persons dressed in Pakistan Army uniform" while an Army spokesman said "soldiers from Pak Army" were involved.

Making a suo motu statement in both the Houses of Parliament, Antony said an Indian army patrol, comprising one Non-Commissioned Officer and five other ranks, was "ambushed on our side" of the LoC in Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir.

"The ambush was carried out by approximately 20 heavily-armed terrorists along with persons dressed in Pakistan army uniform," he said.

Defence spokesman, Jammu, S N Acharya said the Indian Army patrol was ambushed by a Pakistan Border Action Team(BAT).

"A patrol of Indian Army comprising of one Non- Commissioned Officer and five other ranks was ambushed by a Pak Border Action Team (BAT) close to the Line of Control in Poonch Sector of J&K early morning", he said in an official statement.

"In the ensuing firefight, five Indian soldiers were martyred. The ambush was carried out by approximately 20 heavily armed terrorists along with soldiers of Pak Army," he said.

Antony's remarks about involvement of terrorists in the attack triggered angry reactions in Parliament by opposition parties, which said it amounted to giving an "escape route" to Pakistan which already claims that its army is not involved.

Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley termed Antony's statement as "ambiguous" and took a dig, saying that he hoped it was a "typographical error".

Linking it to the Sharm-el-Sheikh episode of 2009 when the mention of Balochistan was found in India-Pakistan joint statement, the BJP leader said that by saying terrorists attacked "you are almost providing in this sentence an opportunity to Pakistan to say that they were non-state actors... It provides escape route to Pakistan, which always says not army but non-state actors" are behind such attacks.

However, Antony stuck to his version, saying "my statement is based on confirmed reports received till the time I made the statement...At this stage we don't want to jump to any conclusion."

People who attacked are wearing Pak Army Uniforms. and the people who were attacked were wearing Indian Army Uniform. This is the simple statement our Congi/Lungi Defence Minister supposed to give.
That is it. He would have saved his face.

We do not want to know whether they were Pak soldiers or Terrorists. We only know that the cowardly attack was from Paapistani soil and we have lost our 5 beloved, brave soldiers. Dialogues, conferences, meetings are not meant for Paapi cannibals. We should strictly follow 'tit for tat'. An eye for an eye, tooth for tooth and 15 enemy heads for 5 Martyrs. Hindustan Zindabaad.

I am a strong supporter of Congress. However, after watching the written statement read by our Defence Minister A.K. Anthony in Parliament, I strongly feel Congress is full of 'chickens' who acquire the highest posts. The way he was trembling and reading the statement like a 5th standard student in front of tough class teacher, specially under the blood boiling situation was undoubtedly causing patriotic citizens blood pressure shoot up. Defence Minister needs to feed some iron tablets to show that he is fit for the post or let him go back to pluck coconuts or row the boat. Enough is enough. India should act tough on 'Paapistan'. Our Martyr's blood should not go waste. We need blood of 15 Paapis in exchange of 5 Martyrs. Jai Hind.

Our Defence minister and his too light talking about the situation and the soldiers death a unfortunate one to us all and to the country as a whole. Precaution prevention and retaliation is missing part what we see here totally. Our defence minister and his soft and conflict reports is surely seen as a weak and negative strength towards our soldiers and too to their fighting spirits and to their morale's .

Whenever the democratically elected Pakistan govt tries to normalize relations with India the ISI & Pakistan Army has played same dirty game of either firing without Provocation at our Soldiers or Pushing the Terrorists across the Border and ensuring that these terrorists are killed by Indian army because of which the India - Pakistan relation gets strained again over this issue.
Policy of Pak Govt & Pak Military are just opposite. Pakistan Army & ISI do not want good relation with India. So they always scuttle the move of friendship by Pak govt by killing Indian Soldiers or killing Indian Prisoners in their Custody or killing P.O.K citizens by wearing the Uniform of Indian Military or some blast in our area of Kashmir through Terrorists trained by them without the knowledge of Pak govt.

You are right Prasheesh Mumbai. Pakistan army never wanted good relation with India. They want to keep enmity with India alive permanently, so that their Importance is not diminished and they continue to get best facilities from Pak govt at the cost of Pak Civilians.
Pak Army is afraid that if Pak govt normalizes relations with India then Pak Army's importance gets reduced & their facilities will be curtailed and their position will be equal to that of civil Police. So, at any cost Pak army wants to keep alive enmity with India forever and keep anti-India sentiments in Pak alive for their own selfishness.
In Pak Army is stronger than democratically elected govt. So, normal relation with Pak is impossible as long as Pak army is stronger than their Govt.

We should not sing shanthimantra always instead sometimes we should act in 'tit for tat' manner. Only then these pakis will learn a lesson.

Dear Mahesh Raj, why the Defense minister should be thrown out of the border? Then what we should have done to the coward people who escorted the terrorists up to Khandar. The minister is giving statement based on the inputs given by the army and he is not assigned to be at the border. The Indian army has its own measures to conduct the damage control.
What do you think Modi will do if he is appointed as Defense minister? The Army chief has all powers and responsibility to safe guard the country. The weapons that our army has ammunition loaded and they are well aware of what to do. Do not just blame the Defense minister just because Congress is ruling and he is talking truth.

PAKISTAN AND ITS GOVERNMENT, ARMY AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS CAN NEVER EVER BE TRUSTED. THEY ARE PERMANENT ROGUES. EVEN THE USA DOES NOT TRUST THEM BUT WORKS WITH THEM BECAUSE OF THEIR OWN NEEDS.

THE TIME FOR JUST 'TALKS' WITH PAK HAS PASSED LONG AGO.

THE TIME FOR RETALIATION HAS ALREADY ARRIVED.

PAKISTAN THINKS THAT INDIA HAS MORE TO LOSE IN ECONOMIC TERMS IN THE EVENT OF A FULL WAR AND THATS WHY THEY KEEP PROVOKING INDIA KNOWING FOR SURE INDIA WILL NOT RETALIATE.

YES INDIA STANDS TO LOSE MORE AS WE ARE ECONOMICALLY FAR BETTER THAN PAKISTAN INSPITE OF ALL THE TURMOIL IN OUR ECONOMY AT PRESENT. PAKISTAN'S ECONOMY IS ALREADY IN THE DUMPS SO THEY HAVE NOTHING MUCH TO LOSE. THEY ARE LITERALLY SURVIVING ON AMERICA'S CHARITY.

THEREFORE I BELIEVE INDIA NEEDS TO USE THE 'CARROT AND DANDA' POLICY WITH PAK. RETALIATE WITH SHORT AND SHARP STRIKES AND TALK WITH THEM AT THE SAME TIME JUST LIKE PAKISTAN DOES TO US. THAT WAY WE CAN ALSO KEEP THE USA OFF OUR BACKS BY SAYING TO THE USA "LOOK WE ARE TALKING PEACE WITH PAKISTAN".

terrorists from other side."Nayiya baala nalliya olage hakidharu kuda seedha aagadhu".
There is no understanding between Govt. and Opposition which they taking advantage.

If they kills dozen soldiers no problem, we need cricket with them.

What Antony meant was that Paki soldiers are terrorists!!!
Some times terrorists have park army i-card in their pocket when they attack. Some times they dress like army men and by seeing them we conclude that they are terrorists and not army men.
Terrorists will not engage army men. They will ambush, kill and disappear. I think it is basic stuff Mr. antony should be aware of.

BJP is just using the incident to get political milage. We have seen their guts after Parliament attack. They wasted tax payers money in just mobilizing army and doing nothing. Vajpayee boasted Aar ya Par ki ladayi hogi and did nothing. Jaswant Singh handed over terrorists to Taliban happily. BJP just does not understand diplomacy and have no vision. There should be a thorough investigation of the incident and then only people should comment on it. Only immature people start barking at every incident.
