Rain cannot dampen Eid festivities

Chandigarh, Aug 9 (IANS): Intermittent showers failed to dampen the festive spirit as people celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr in Chandigarh and parts of Punjab and Haryana Friday.

Despite moderate to heavy rain at various places, people started flocking to mosques since morning.

In Punjab, state-level celebrations were organised in the Muslim-dominated area of Malerkotla in Sangrur district, 130 km from here.

Thousands of Muslims offered prayers at the main mosque in Malerkotla.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal joined in the celebrations and addressed a gathering despite the continuous rain.

Eid celebrations were also reported from Faridkot, Gurdaspur and other districts of Punjab.

In Chandigarh, people in large numbers reached the Sector 20 Jama Masjid and other mosques.

In Haryana, Eid festivities were reported from Panipat, Mewat, Ambala and other areas.
