Jagan resigns as MP over AP split; his mother quits Assembly

Hyderabad, Aug 10 (PTI): YSR Congress President and Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy today tendered resignation from his Lok Sabha membership, protesting the manner in which the Congress party sought to divide Andhra Pradesh.

Simultaneously, Jagan's mother Y S Vijaya, who is Honorary President of YSRC and MLA from Pulivendula in Kadapa district, too, resigned from the membership of the Assembly.

Jagan is currently in jail on corruption charges and lodged at Chanchalguda prison here.

"Jagan faxed his resignation letter to Lok Sabha Speaker through the (Chanchalguda) jail authorities. It will also be sent by post," YSRC Member of Parliament Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy told reporters here.

The 40-year-old YSR Congress leader has been lodged in the jail as an "un-convicted criminal prisoner" since May 28, 2012 in the illegal assets case, being investigated by CBI.

Vijaya also faxed her resignation to the Assembly Speaker's office. "Her resignation will also be sent to the Speaker by a special messenger," Mekapati said.

YSRC has 17 MLAs and two MPs in all.

Sixteen MLAs of YSRC submitted their resignation from the Assembly membership two days before the Congress came out with its decision on July 30 to bifurcate the state and grant statehood to Telangana.

Jagan's fledgling political party is a strong votary of a united Andhra Pradesh.

"I, too, sent my resignation to the Lok Sabha Speaker on August 5. Now, our leaders Jagan and Vijayamma have also tendered their resignations," Mekapati said.
