Taj city celebrates independence day

Agra, Aug 15 (IANS): The Taj Mahal city of Agra celebrated India's independence day Thursday but most streets and the main roads were under water after a night of drizzle.

Agra Commissioner Pradip Bhatnagar hoisted the national tricolour while District Magistrate Zuher bin Sagir honoured freedom fighters.

Flags were hoisted on all government buildings while schools held parades and cultural programmes.

Street children led by activist Hridesh Choudhary saluted the tricolour and sang patriotic songs at a function at Bodla.

At the Central Jail, prisoners presented songs.
