Bangalore, Feb 4: An elderly woman was murdered and gold ornaments worth Rs. 1 lac and cash were looted from her house in J.P. Nagar police station limits on Friday.
The police gave the name of the victim as Venkatamma (75), a resident of 1st Block, 6th Phase, J.P. Nagar.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Alok Kumar told The Hindu that the assailants had slit Venkatamma's throat when she was alone in the house. Kumar said the murder was suspected to have taken place between 12.30 p.m. and 2 p.m. The incident came to light around 3 p.m. when Venkatamma's daughter-in-law returned home from work.
Though there was a shop on the ground floor of the building, its proprietor, a Muslim, had closed it from 12.30 p.m. to 2 p.m. as he had to offer Friday prayers, Kumar said. The police suspect that some one who had kept a watch on the house has committed the crime. The J.P.Nagar police have registered a case.
