British teen girl arrested for assaulting 80-year-old Sikh man

London, Aug 18 (PTI): A teenaged British girl has been arrested for assaulting an 80-year-old Sikh man after a video of the incident went viral online.

The elderly victim was punched in the face and shoved to the ground. His turban fell off and the attack left him with a bloodied nose and black eye, British media reports said.

The 19-year-old girl abused the man and spat on him before walking off. The attack, apparently unprovoked, occurred near a bus station in Coventry's Trinity Street at 8.30pm on August 10.

Police acted after a video of the incident, recorded by a passer-by on a mobile phone, went viral online and was shared on Facebook.

The girl was arrested yesterday, with police saying she would be questioned about the attack. Police are treating the attack as "serious malicious wounding", which is punishable with up to five years in prison.

The video of the attack triggered a wave of revulsion after it was circulated widely on social media, The Coventry Telegraph reported.

Coventry Police chief Andy Nicholson was quoted by the paper as saying: "This was a despicable, violent attack on an elderly man in broad daylight. The victim is an 80-year-old man, he was left with a bloodied nose and a black eye.

"A video showing the assault spread rapidly on social media and quite rightly, the offender's actions are being condemned by everyone who's viewed it."

Police are keen to hear from people who witnessed the attack and moments leading up to it, and have urged persons who shared the video or still images of the assault to remove them from social media accounts as they could hinder the inquiry.

UP-Bihar Chatras had got the Railway exam papers & ready Answers in advance as they had allegedly paid Rs.5 lakhs to a Railway Board Member from Bihar. So, they were beaten for adopting dishonest way for gobbling all Railway employment in Maharashtra, A.P. & Karntaka and depriving the merited local Chatras. How is that all of a sudden Biharis became super intelligent during the time when Laloo was Railway Minister and now suddenly they have become dullards ? Recently Rly Minister Bansal was caught in a scam of appointing 4000 employees for Rly Protection Force by dubious means by accepting Rs.2 lakhs each from 4000 people.

I agree with you. There must be some reason why 'the elderly victim was punched in the face' by a teen aged girl. Even elderly people can be mischievous. In Mumbai on 15th night one great- grand father raped his three and half year old great-grand daughter.

Taking into account the principles of the secularism some of the countries banned National/Religious dress and symbols in public. Even when I was in Canada I saw the person of 75 years of age is applying for Jobs. I came to know in application, if you mention you religion or date of birth is a crime because the recruiter will discriminate the applicants on the basis of his age/religion/colour of skin. When this rule is made for the benefit of the people why we have show that I am of particular religion or country? We will try to get nationality of those countries by hook or cook and follow some of their rules which are beneficial to us and politicize which are not acceptable to us. I visited one of the famous temple in Kerala and they asked me to wear Doti and enter or they told I am not allowed to enter the temple, I wore doti and entered it. Why I have to complain? Just If I want to enter I have wear doti or just I have to leave the place without entering the temple.

Racism is still a existing factor in British towards other immigrant communities to an extent!!! Nobody will deny this fact totally too!!!. A superior and a inferior mentality towards others i.e a difference treats in between white black and brown!!!.

Basically British people respect Sikh community, and even today there are some Sikh soldiers in British Military and they have been given Concession as regards sporting Beard & wearing Turban. Rest of the Soldiers are strictly prohibited from sporting beard or wearing any other head gear other than provided by Army. In U.K. for Two wheeler riders Helmet is Compulsory except for Sikhs. This Proves that British have high regards for Religious feeling of Sikhs. This girls must have mistaken that this old Sikh is a Afgaani or Phaktooni Pathaan because they too have similar turban but with extra tail at backside.

We are quick in passing judgement! This kind of incident happens almost everywhere in India and goes unreported. But when such an incident takes places in UK it gets highlighted as there are no day-to-day crimes there.
Knowing the turban issue world-wide, it is wrong to say that it is a racial attack, it is nothing but a hate-crime. If it was a racial attack, then every single Indian/Paki/Arab would have been a target by now in one way or the other.
I watched the video, and it is not clear whether the girl who started it or someone provoked her or is she mentally stable etc. as there were onlookers who kept watching them fight. Also, point to be noted your honour, the sikh man also kicked her thrice!!! so he was not completely at the receiving end.

Brits are normally polite in dealing comapared to Americans...I am surprised by this,,, american call brits "soft speaking bast**ds"....

Henry, there is lot of misunderstanding relate to sikhism in western countries..Sikhism is very minority religion confined mostly to India only, other part of the world dont know much about it (compared to Hinduism, christianity & Islam)..By appearance Sikhs looks different with beard & pagadi which people compare to OBL etc,...Sorry to say, most of the hate crimes in US,UK, Canada against Sikhs happened because of this..After 9/11 Sikhs are at receiving end for the crimes which they didn't do..It is high time, Sikhs to educate the people of host countries about their religion & remove misconception..

In Rome, be like a Romans.
In 1980's good number of Sikh youngsters were shaving their beard.

Even the Col.Brar who was attacked in UK, is a Sikh soldier but has clean shave. It it left to the Sikh community how to dress in foreign land.
