Scanty rain: Jharkhand announces aid for each district


Ranchi, Aug 19 (IANS): The Jharkhand government Monday admitted that the state did not receive adequate rain and each district would be given Rs.2 crore to deal with the drought-like situation.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren reviewed the situation arising due to deficient rain and told reporters that the Rs.2 crore will be used by the district administration to help the affected people.

"The state is facing drought like situation. Each of the district will be given s 2 crore to deal with the situation" he said.

The agriculture department has been given Rs.14 crore to deal with the situation. The crop insurance period has been extended from July 31 to Sep 30.

According to official data, Jharkhand has received 476 mm rain as against the normal 771 mm till second week of August.

Paddy sowing has been taken up in around 32 percent of the land dedicated to the crop in the state.

At least six district where paddy sowing has been hit are Palamu, Garwah, Koderma, Godda and Pakur.

In Jharkhand, farmers heavily depend on rain as only 12 percent of the cultivable land is irrigated.
