Kasargod: Police get leads on havala, fake currency racket

Kasargod, Aug 19: A group supplying fake currency and havala money is said to be active in the coastal region, with its center in Kasargod.

The questioning of Talangare’s Majeed who is in police custody in Kasargod in connection with fake currency has enabled the police to arrive at the conclusion.  Majeed is said to be the main member in the group and he used to convey fake currency and havala money in the Kasargod region.

The agents here were taking the cash in their bikes and other vehicles to Kozhikode, Malappuram, Cannanore and other places, it is said.  Many people in the Gulf reportedly send money through havala for profit. There are instances of fake currency being kept in between genuine notes at the time of delivery.

About Rs 31 lac worth fake currency had passed through Mangalore Airport in August 2012. Several transactions involving fake currency had taken place here then. Purchase of jewellery and other items giving fake currency had come to light.

Kaidakkad’s Jabbar who had bought jewellery by giving fake currency on August 17, 2012 at a Kanhangad jewellery store had disclosed useful information when arrested and questioned.  A person called Moidin Haji from Udupi had sent the fake currency through Chetan Kumar to Mangalore.  Rs 5 lac out of it was delivered to the house of Jabbar through Bantwal’s Usman.  Rs 24 lac was handed over to one Nasser for havala transactions.

When Jabbar and Nasser were arrested and questioned, the information on fake currency and havala was disclosed by them.  Police have come to know that Nasser had returned Rs 17 lac to Chetan Kumar on knowing about Jabbar’s arrest and Rs 7 lac out of it was set on fire.
