Uganda to charter plane for World Cup fans

Kampala, Aug 21 (IANS): The Ugandan government will charter a plane to fly football fans to Morocco for supporting the Cranes team during a 2014 World Cup qualifier against Senegal.

Jessica Alupo, minister of education and sports told Xinhua Tuesday that they have already committed about $250,000 to charter a plane for Morocco.

"We are only waiting for the airline to finalise the arrangement," disclosed the Minister.

The Cranes need to beat Senegal Sep 7 at the Marrakech Stadium to be able to qualify for the last phase of the World Cup qualifier. The West African team leads Group J with nine points, while Uganda Cranes are second on eight points.

"We have always supported the national football team and also realised that this game is very crucial and fans need to go and give maximum support so that we get positive results," said Alupo.

She said the government has already allocated over $150,000 dollars towards the Cranes team to cater for preparations, allowances, air tickets and accommodation ahead of the crucial game.

In their first meeting last year in Kampala, Senegal managed to hold Uganda to a 1-1 draw.
