WADA revokes Rio 2016 anti-doping lab

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 28 (IANS): The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has revoked the licence of the testing laboratory earmarked for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

In a statement released Tuesday, WADA declared that the facility had failed to meet international standards.

"The (laboratory) will no longer be authorised to carry out the testing of doping control samples on behalf of WADA or any testing authority," the statement said.

WADA had initially suspended the facility from operating Aug 8 before ruling that it be shut entirely. No further details were given for the decision.

The laboratory has 21 days to lodge an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and can even reapply for accreditation.
