Bayern Munich beat Chelsea to win European Super Cup

Prague, Aug 31 (IANS): Pep Guardiola triumphed again in his rivalry against Jose Mourinho as Bayern Munich beat 10-man Chelsea 7-6 after a nerve-racking penalty shoot-out to win the European Super Cup.

Chelsea substitute striker Romelu Lukaku saw his effort saved by Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer as the German team claimed a 5-4 penalty-kick win Friday, reports Xinhua.

Chelsea, who had their midfielder Ramires dismissed late in the second half, seemed set to win as Eden Hazard scored in extra time after Frank Ribery hand cancelled out Fernando Torres' opener. But Javi Martinez's last-gasp goal shattered the possibility.

Chelsea manager Mourinho said the referee was too harsh with his dismissal of Ramires.

"Rules are rules but there is a very important rule which is common sense which is the passion for the game. When a referee takes this decision, I'm not sure he's if he is in love with football," he said.

"The best team played with 10-men for a long, long period in the game. They played against the champions of Europe and they were the best team. We only have reasons to be proud, to believe in the future. But I prefer just to say the best team lost and stay with it."

Mourinho's side went ahead in the eighth minute when Torres swept in Andre Schurrle's cross from the right flank. Two minutes after the re-start Ribery drifted in off the left and fired in an unstoppable 25-yard shot to equalise.

Then in the 84th minute, Ramires got his marching order after foul on Mario Gotze but Chelsea withstood Bayern's attack and raced ahead again three minutes into the extra-time when Hazard replicated Ribery's strike. Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech thwarted some efforts from the German opponents but couldn't save Martinez's close shot in the last minute. The trophy had to be determined by spot-kicks.

After the first nine penalty-takers succeeded, it came down to Lukaku whose soft kick was comfortably saved by Neuer, handing Guardiola his eighth win over Mourinho in their 16 head-to-head encounters.

Guardiola paid tribute to his predecessor Jupp Heynckes and thanked the former Bayern boss after the game. "Heynckes is the architect and creator of this title. I want to dedicate it to him."
