US Open: Nadal, Federer through, Kvitova, Wozniacki out

New York, Sep 1 (IANS): The sixth day of competition at the US Open saw second seed Rafael Nadal and seventh seed Roger Federer advance, while women's singles seventh seed Peta Kvitova and sixth seed Caroline Wozniacki were eliminated from the Flushing Meadows here.

The 2010 US Open champion Nadal needed just two hours to defeat Ivan Dodig from Croatia 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, keeping the 'no set dropped' record intact to reach the fourth round Saturday, reports Xinhua.

"I think I played a correct match today. Happy with 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 against a player who came to this tournament winning against tough opponents like Davydenko and Verdasco," said Nadal.

The 27-year-old Spaniard missed the 2012 edition because of a knee injury but took home nine ATP titles in a single year, the best among all male players. The owner of 12 Grand Slam titles kept winning to claim titles in Cincinnati and Montreal and entered the US Open with 10-0 record, which has now become 13-0.

"When you are playing well, you have the chance to play more aggressively. I am just trying to adjust small things to be a better player, as I have done all my career," said Nadal, who would meet the winner of the match between John Isner and Philipp Kohlschreiber in the next round.

Seventh seed Federer also enjoyed an easy outing, beating Adrian Mannarino from France 6-3, 6-0, 6-2. Fourth seed David Ferrer, eighth seed Richard Gasquet also advanced to the last 16.

However, the female seeds were less lucky.

Sixth seed Wozniacki won the first set but still lost to 21-year-old Italian qualifier Camila Giorgi 6-4, 3-6, 3-6 while seventh seed Kvitova was beaten by local talent Alison Riske 6-3, 6-0.

It was a perfect day in office for Indians too as Leander Paes, Rohan Bopanna, Sania Mirza and Divij Sharan advanced to the third round in their respective groups.

In second round men's doubles action, Paes, Sharan and Bopanna won their respective matches while Sania won her women's doubles tie to move ahead.
