Insurance manager gets three-year jail for bribe

Chennai, Sep 3 (IANS): A CBI special court in Tamil Nadu Tuesday sentenced a National Insurance Company official to three years rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs.10,000 on him for demanding a bribe from a surveyor.

In a statement here, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said the Coimbatore special court sentenced C. Soosaipandi, divisional manager, to three years' rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs.10,000 for demanding a bribe of Rs.5,000 from an insurance surveyor.

Soosaipandi, who was posted at Coimbatore - around 500 km from here, demanded the bribe from R. Balasubramani for handing over the survey fee cheque of Rs.9,617 and for allotment of further claims survey assignments.

On Balasubramani's complaint, the CBI laid a trap Nov 3, 2011 and caught Soosaipandi "while demanding and accepting the bribe amount of Rs.5,000".

The CBI filed a chargesheet against Soosaipandi under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

According to an official of the insurance company, Soosaipandi was placed under suspension soon after his arrest and the next action against him will be taken after receiving the copy of the judgment.
