Odisha policeman dies after gun battle with Maoists


Ranchi, Sep 3 (IANS): A policeman injured in a gun battle with Maoist guerrillas died during course of treatment in Ranchi Tuesday, police sources said.

Santosh Kumar Singh, a constable of the state police, was injured during a shootout with Maoist guerrillas in the Tebo jungle of West Singhbhum district Tuesday.

Singh was air-lifted to Ranchi for better treatment. He died during the course of treatment in the state capital.

Following a tip-off, security personnel zeroed in on the guerrillas in the jungle. A gun battle ensued, during which the constable was injured.

Maoist guerrillas are active in 18 of the 24 districts in the state.
