Bangalore, Sep 3 (IANS): A jewellery shop here was burgled by thieves who made a hole in its wall and fled with gold and silver ornaments valued at lakhs of rupees, a senior police official said Tuesday.

"The incident came to light when Sampige Jewellers owner N. Suresh opened the shop morning after it remained closed since late Sunday. He was shocked to see the shop vandalised and a hole in the rear wall behind which there is an open site," Joint Commissioner of Police S. Ravi told IANS after visiting the spot.

According to the first information report police filed on a complaint by Suresh, about 100 gm of gold ornaments valued at Rs.3 lakh, 30 kg of silver ornaments valued at Rs.20 lakh and Rs.25,000 in cash are missing from the shop.

"The shop was closed for business late Sunday and did not open Monday as it was a weekly holiday. The owner did not install a closed circuit television (CCTV) camera in the shop where there was burglar alarm," Ravi said.

Police formed a special team to investigate the case and launched a manhunt to nab the unidentified thieves.

"Though there is no breakthrough yet, we are confident of cracking the case soon, as we have got clues from the burgled shop and details of people employed in the shop and owner's relatives," Ravi said.

As there was no habitation in the open site behind the shop and where wild grass and bushes had grown, no one apparently noticed or heard any sound of the wall being broken till the owner noticed early Tuesday.
