New Delhi, Sep 5 (IANS): The Congress Thursday renewed its demand for the resignation of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, citing a CD related to the 2006 killing of a witness in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh staged killing case.
According to Congress spokesperson Bhakta Charan Das, the National Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission has written to the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe the CD and submit a report before the Supreme Court.
The Congress had Sep 3 showed and distributed the CDs of the sting operation which caught Bharatiya Janata Party leader Prakash Javadekar allegedly trying to put hurdles in the path of the trial and other judicial proceedings in the case.
Das said the SC/ST panel has written to chief secretaries and directors general of police of Gujarat and Rajasthan to look into the CD and submit a report to it.
The witness, Tulsiram Prajapati was killed in another allegedly staged shootout Dec 28, 2006 in which then Gujarat minister of state for home Amit Shah is the main accused.
Prajapati was the only witness to the December 2005 police shootout in which Sohrabuddin Sheikh was killed.
Targeting Modi, Das said: "There are 32 police officers in jail in Gujarat, including six Indian Police Service officers for allegedly carrying out fake encounters (staged shoot-outs)."
"Why should the political leadership which gave the orders to the police officers not be in jail," he asked.
Earlier, Congress media department chief Ajay Maken had demanded a CBI probe into the CD.
"How can he (Modi) stay as chief minister when the investigation process is going on. The senior leader of Bharatiya Janata Party, Narendra Modi, used his chair and intervened with the justice system," he said at a press conference.
The issue came to light after a petition was filed by a journalist on the basis of a sting operation done by him.
He alleged that attempts were made by Javadekar and his fellow party MP Bhupendra Singh Yadav to impede the trial and other judicial proceedings by manipulating the complainant with the sole intent to protect Shah.
