Coalgate scam: 'PM will be available to CBI on formal request'

New Delhi, Sep 8 (PTI): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will make himself available to CBI in the Coalgate investigation if a formal request is made, Union Minister Kamal Nath said today.

"Why not? CBI under law can question anybody and the PM is within the law. So if CBI wants to question him, the PM is a part of the law," he told Karan Thapar in CNN-IBN's Devil's Advocate programme.

He was asked if the Prime Minister will make himself available if there is a formal request.

Nath said the PM has nothing to hide on the issue even though he held the Coal Ministry portfolio for a short period.

"If there is something to be asked from him, he has nothing to hide," he said, adding his "credentials will remain untouched".

He also dismissed the suggestion that the Coalgate episode would prove to be the 'Watergate' for the Prime Minister, saying the issue would rather prove to be the Watergate for the opposition which has brought many charges against him.

Strongly defending the Prime Minister on the issue of the missing coal files, he said there is no "malafide" in the files going missing.

Blaming the press for creating a hype to suggest that the government is stonewalling the investigation, he said that only when it is confirmed that the files cannot be found, then it can be said they are missing.

"Fifteen days back some were found, some more were found later on and more will be found. There is no malafide in the files missing. If there is a malafide, there will be an FIR," he said.

Nath recalled the recent statement made by the PM that appropriate actions will be taken if the files are not found.

Replying to a question, he said the government would amend the RTI Act to keep political parties out of its purview and the Bill for it has been sent to the Parliamentary Standing Committee.

Asked if the government is committed to the Bill, he said, "We have introduced this Bill. We have taken it the Standing Committee".

On if there is a second thought on the issue, he said, "At this time not."

Nath also made it clear that the government was not against the disclosure of the financial statement of the parties but it was against parting information about their functioning.

"What was sought in the amendment was if you are to ask a political party why I was asked to contest from a constituency, why was so and so district Congress committee formed, this is what is not acceptable to us. What is fully available is the financial statement," he said.

He said that it was "absolutely wrong and false" a perception to have that politicians, MPs or MLAs have anything to hide.

The Minister said under RTI, one can get any information from the Election Commission.

He slammed the media for creating a perception that the PM lacks leadership qualities. Media, he said, is being "unfair and uncharitable" to the PM.

Nath also dismissed a suggestion that the PM was unwilling and that he was forced into making statements on the state of the economy and the missing files due to the persistence of the opposition.

WEAK MINDED PEOPLE MUST KNOW THAT "SILENCE" IS A QUALITY OF GREAT LEADERS LIKE OUR PM UNLIKE THOSE WHO DWELL ON PUBLICITY AND HYPE.HOW FAIR IT IS TO BLAME A SINGLE FOLLOWER OF TRUTH ALONE, FOR THE SLOWDOWN OF ECONOMY WHILE INTERNATIONAL MARKETS HAVE CRASHED. SECONDLY, IT'S PITY THAT A SINCERE PERSON IS SURROUNDED BY LAWBREAKERS FROM HIS OWN GOVERNMENT. NOW WHO IS TARNISHING THE IMAGE OF THE PM CHAIR? IS IT NOT MEDIA, POLITICAL LEADERS, AND COMMENTATORS WHO MURDER HIM WITH THEIR COMMENTS?
WHAT IS REAL DEVELOPMENT?IT IS THE SOCIETY: JUST, PEACEFUL, ECONOMICALLY STABLE,& FREEDOM OF THE CITIZENS EXERCISED ACCORDING TO THE CONSTITUTION. FINALLY KNOW FOR SURE: SLOWDOWN OF PEACE AND COMMUNAL HARMONY,MORALS IS MUCH MORE DANGEROUS THAN ECONOMY SLOWDOWN. BECAUSE MORE PEOPLE R KILLED DUE TO FANATICISM AND LOW MORALE. SO WORK FOR HARMONY.

Vicor saheb, International markets are rock solid, it is just India and its market collapsed due to MMS. Do you know for how many riots MMS and his party is responsible for in the country. Starting from Kashmir riots to latest UP/Rajasthan/Maharastra riots. Ultimately end of the day price rise and inflation matters to common man and nothing else. He does care about other things.

It is not enough if MMS is clean his team should be clean. Remote control of this govermnet should be clean. WHich is not.

MMS killed Indian economy. Being ecnomist this was not expected. One need not kill directly to have blood on his hands. He directly killed rupee and there by common man's life by price raise and inflation.

Is that the definition of murder as per Indian law ? Does the Supreme Court of India say that is murder ?

If you consider that as killing then what do you call Yeddy's deeds ?

    Is it Mass murder ?

Not having Lokayukta in Gujarat is what ? Is it protection of murderers crimes ?

Cant call anything murder just because it suits your argument to malign our Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh.

Dear Jossey and Declan, at least for today being very auspicious day for us, I can’t write something bad even though it is true and deserved to people like you. We have many incidents where innocent people shed their blood on the streets for many cruel atrocities before and after the Gujarat Riots. If you are sincere enough, pls start paying homage to those people first and keep continuing to blame someone
