Employment rate in Australia slips


Sydney, Sep 12 (IANS): Australia's unemployment rate increased 0.1 percentage points to 5.8 percent in August, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported Thursday.

The number of people employed fell by 10,800 to 11.64 million in August, Xinhua reported citing an ABS report.

Full-time employment fell 2,600 to 8.13 million in August while part-time employment was down 8,200 to 3.51 million.

The number of unemployed people rose by 9,400 to 714,100 in August.

The August participation rate was 65.0 percent, down from 65.1 percent in July.

The participation rate is the proportion of the population that have a job, or are looking for work or ready to start work.
