Students torch police vehicle, five arrested

New Delhi, Sep 12 (IANS): Five students were arrested here Thursday for torching a Delhi Police van on Delhi University's north campus after a police vehicle injured a student.

At midnight on Wednesday, police had stopped a student from fasting against non-availability of accommodation for his passout colleagues.

Praveen Kumar, 22, was on hunger strike near the arts faculty for 10 days before police picked him up after his condition deteriorated.

While heading towards a hospital, another student jumped in front of the police van and was injured. Police took both students to hospital, where they are recuperating.

Angry students torched a van of the area's station house officer and raised slogans against police who used force to stop the protestors.

"We have arrested five students and booked them under various sections for damaging government property," said a police officer.

Additional force was deployed in the area.
