UP cancels permission for BJP rally in Fatehpur Sikri

Lucknow, Sep 13 (IANS): The Uttar Pradesh government late Thursday ordered the cancellation of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rally scheduled for Sep 15 in Fatehpur Sikri near Agra.

Officials said that the district administration cancelled permission for the rally after reviewing the situation in the state in the wake of communal riots in Muzaffaranagar.

The rally, to be held about 350 km from state capital Lucknow in a city founded in the 16th century by Mughal emperor Akbar, was to be addressed by party patriarch Lal Krishna Advani and BJP general secretary Varun Gandhi. The BJP had been making elaborate arrangements for the rally over the past month.

Permission for holding the rally in Akola within Fatehpur Sikri, 18 km from Agra, had earlier been granted by the state administration.

As the news of the cancellation of permission for the rally spread, angry BJP workers raised anti-government slogans and charged Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his government of working under the pressure of state Minority Affairs Minister Mohammad Azam Khan.

State spokesman of the BJP Vijay Bahadur Pathak slammed the state government and said all talk of restoration of democracy by the Samajwadi Party (SP) government when coming to power was proven a "big sham."

"Cancelling political activity without any rhyme or reason... is this democracy?" Pathak asked. He said the cancellation of permission for the rally smacked of minority appeasement.

He asked why, when the Samajwadi Party's national executive meeting could occur in Agra for two days, the BJP could not hold a rally a few kilometres away.

Firming up its position on the issue, the state president of the BJP Laxmikant Bajpayi said the party will go ahead with its plans, and dared the Akhilesh Yadav government to do whatever it can.

Accusing Chief Minister of robbing people of their basic political rights, Bajpayi said the state unit of the BJP will not be cowed down.

"There is no rationale, logic behind the cancellation of our rally, which had been approved by the government," the state BJP president said.

Sources say the party has now decided to take the matter to the streets and ensure that the Samajwadi Party government is exposed and cornered.

    In the last two decades, this is the first incident of a communal riot in Uttar Pradesh, when the civil administration has had to bring in the armed force to grab control over the law and order situation. The last time such an incident took place, where the army had to be called for, was in December 1992, where communal forces erupted after the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. The twin districts of Muzaffarnagar and Shamli have been witnessing sporadic violence for over a month.
    Earlier in June this year, a dalit woman was allegedly gang raped by youth members of the minority community. The local people protested against police inaction. Everything was under control until earlier this month, when people from both the communities came to blows after a sanitation worker was killed in communal clash, in Shamli.

    The situation in Muzaffarnagar started deteriorating since 27 August, when two youths of the Jat community were beaten to death in Kawaal village, under Jaansath tehsil of Muzaffarnagar. One youth from the minority community was also killed in the clash. The clash occurred over the alleged incident of eve teasing. The Jat community, to protest the incident organized a Panchayat at Jaansath town on 31 August. The extremist leaders, mostly BJP, joined the panchayat and demanded action against the culprits responsible for the murder of the two Jat youths. The Sangh Parivar put more fuel to the fire by circulating fake CD. A BJP legislator who allegedly uploaded and shared a fake video that was one of the triggers of communal clashes and BJP MLA Sangeet Som was among some 200 people charged for circulating the fake online video on youtube and other social sites, purportedly showing two men being lynched by a mob in the state. Even mobile phones were used to spread the video and rumours. The is the strategy of the Sangh Parivar to divide different region with false propaganda and rule India through killing and burning.

    RamaKrishna.K.Mangalore, you have given a perfect name for Samaj vadi Party, that is : Samaj Virodhi Party.
    They have always come up in up in politics by giving shelter to Anti- Socials that is Samaj Virodhis.
    Even in Mumbai last year their party workers had attacked Monument of Nation's Pride - Amar Jawan and openly insulted Indian Army Shaheeds who had died for our Country.

    A welcome decision by UP administrator which saw many innocents death in last few days in the name of 'Mahapanchayat'.

    Enough of bloodshed.This is not called 'development' when BJP cannot unify the country.All for political gains.

    Have you seen the news report who started it?.And again after friday prayer who instigated it by provocative speech...? the speakers are from MP's and MLA's of SP ,BSP and congress leaders from particular community?.AFTER this only BJP's local leader not MLA"S and MP's level held such meeting...,here we have to teach people of nationalism.. not communalism.This can be possible only by impartial administration..looking at the citizen as indian and not like hindus ,muslims ,sikhs etc..., and this is possible only under BJP...,

    As usual RSS lead BJP want to put fuel on fire whenever something happens in sensitive areas then blame ruling party.Now people realize (except communal violence supporters)RSS-BJP is totally responsible and take lead role to incite violence all over India hence voting for them is a big sin.Remove this communal party from the root and make India a peaceful country

    A correct decision by the UP government. BJP is trying to catch the fish in the troubled waters in the wake of Muzaffarnagar communal riots. No government will allow such rallies at a time when the situation is tense throughout UP.
