Sao Paulo ease relegation fears with victory

Rio de Janeiro, Sep 16 (IANS): Sao Paulo emerged from the Campeonato Brasileiro relegation zone with a 2-0 away victory over Vasco da Gama.

Rodrigo Caio opened the scoring at the Sao Januario stadium Sunday with a precise 30th-minute header before Antonio Carlos pounced on a Diogo Silva error to fire in the visitors' second with 20 minutes remaining, reports Xinhua.

The result lifted Sao Paulo to 16th in the standings, one spot ahead of Vasco.

"We have to stay realistic and not get ahead of ourselves," Sao Paulo coach Muricy Ramalho said after the match.

"It's important to be humble and start stringing some wins together because that is something we haven't been able to do."

Meanwhile, Internacional rose to fifth with a 1-0 victory over Criciuma while Botafogo remained second after defeating Santos 1-0. Reigning FIFA Club World Cup champions Corinthians lost 2-1 to Goias and Flamengo drew 1-1 with Ponte Preta.
