Kolkata flies kites to talk of women's safety

Kolkata, Sep 16 (IANS): Thousands of colourful kites dotted the cityscape Monday as part of a special drive to create awareness about atrocities against women, a day ahead of Vishwakarma Puja known for customary kite-flying.

A whopping 5,000 kites with messages were distributed to Kolkata residents near the Sovabazaar Metro station whereas several thousand more were given to people in various districts to mark the kite-flying ritual.

Kites carrying slogans like "We promise to protect women in our society" and "We will ensure women have a safe childhood" were flown across West Bengal to spread the message.

"We thought kites are loved by all and are flown during the Vishwakarma Puja...so they could be used to spread awareness," activist and Medical Bank director D. Asish told IANS.

Vishwakarma Puja will be celebrated Sep 17.
