Kolkata celebrates Vishwakarma Puja


Kolkata, Sep 17 (IANS): Workers here Tuesday offered prayers to Lord Vishwakarma, the divine architect, for safe conditions in factories and industries.

Artisans, craftsmen, mechanics, welders, industrial workers, factory workers and workers of all kinds offered prayers to Vishwakarma to ensure smooth functioning of machine parts and their tools.

Pujas were held at various spots, including cycle-rickshaw and auto-rickshaw stands, across the city.

Vehicles were decked up in garlands and streamers while engineers refrained from using gadgets and other devices in a mark of obeisance to the god.

Factories and warehouses remained shut as labourers enjoyed devotional songs and special food.

Pakistani truck-art artists, currently in the city to decorate the Hatibagan Nabin Pally pandal, flew kites in a unique cross-cultural event.

Idols and photographs were installed at factories, automobile shops. Miniature idols adorned the interiors of cabs and buses.

Private car owners went for flashy decorations and car-washes to give a fresh look to their prised possessions.

The day is also celebrated by youths by flying colourful kites. Competitions on flying kites are also held in localities.
