Angola, Myanmar establish diplomatic ties

Luanda, Sep 20 (IANS): Angola and Myanmar have signed an accord to establish diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The document was signed in New York Thursday by Angola's Ambassador to the UN Ismael Martins and his Myanmarese counterpart Kyaw Tin, Xinhua reported Friday citing Angola's official news agency Angop.

Martins said Myanmar had a strong economy and an economic structure similar to that of Angola and that the Asian country was one of the major offshore oil and gas producers

Myanmar also has experience in agricultural products, including rice, that Angola was yet to explore, which could be exploited in the relations between the two countries, he added.

Ambassador Tin believed there were advantages in the cooperation with Angola as the two countries have similar objectives within the context of the world community.

He said Angola was an important regional partner and very active in ensuring regional peace and stability.

Tin added that his country would support Angola's bid for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council.
