Russian football fans seek free ride to Rio

Moscow, Sep 20 (IANS): Russia's Fans Association (VOB) is negotiating with one of the commercial airlines on airlifting a group of fans to the FIFA World Cup in Brazil free of charge.

According to VOB president Alexander Shprygin, the carrier, whose name he did not disclose, will provide two planes for the Russian supporters if the national team makes sure of a slot in the finals next summer, reports Xinhua.

Currently, the Russian team occupies the upper line in the qualification Group F winning six games and losing two. The next game, Russia vs Luxemburg, is scheduled for Oct 11.

Shprygin reminded that during the European Championships last year there were four flights allocated to transport the fans.

The VOB is a collective member of the Russian Football Union. "The list of the fans will be compiled by (next) May," Shprygin was quoted as saying Friday.

"I will compile that list personally," Shprygin added.

He said that airline might consider the other option of offering massive discounts for the tickets to Rio-de-Janeiro rather then offer them for free.

Brazil hosts the FIFA World Cup finals in June-July 2014.
