Valletta, Sep 22 (IANS): Malta celebrated its 49th anniversary of independence from Britain Saturday, with an official ceremony held in the captial city and its adjacent town Floriana in the morning to mark this special occasion.
The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) held a parade down Republic Street and formed up at St. John Square, where it accorded a salute to Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and it was inspected by President George Abela, Xinhua reported.
Malta, which gained its political Independence from Britain Sep 21, 1964, is a southern European country in the Mediterranean Sea, 80 km south of Sicily island, 284 km east of Tunisia and 333 km north of Libya. It covers just over 316 km, making it one of the world's smallest and most densely populated countries.
