Budapest, Sep 23 (TNN): Sandeep Tulsi Yadav capped a fine performance by the Indian wrestlers in the World Championship in Budapest by claiming a bronze in the Greco-Roman 66kg category on the final day of the competition on Sunday.
Sandeep's bronze followed a silver won by freestyle grapplers Amit Kumar (silver in 55kg) and Narsingh Yadav (bronze in 74kg), India's best-ever performance in the history of the championships.
Sandeep came up with an inspired show against Aleksandar Maksimovic, defeating the Serbian 4-0 in the bronze medal match.
The lone bright spot for the Indians on Sunday, Yadav had earlier beate Sharur Vardanyan of Sweden 6-4 in his repechage encounter to earn a shot at the bronze at the Papp Laszlo Sports Arena.
This was after Yadav's creditable run was halted in the quarterfinals by Han-Su Ryu of South Korea who comprehensively beat the Indian 10-0 before eventually sailing into the final, thus opening the repechage door for the Indian.
Yadav, who got a bye in the first round, got the better of Ismael Sanchez of Spain 5-0 and then accounted for Moldova's Mihail Cosniceanu 6-2, riding over his opponents on higher technical superiority. But Yadav could not repeat his performance and was tamed by the Korean at the last eight stage.
Earlier, Rajbir Chhikara (74kg) and Naveen (120kg) lost their opening bouts to exit the competition. While Chhikara lost to Finland's Veli-Karri Souminen 0-5, Naveen could not resist the challenge from Riza Kayaalp of Turkey and was beaten 0-4.
