Not quitting; Modi challenge must be met: PM

On Board Air India One, Oct 1 (IANS): Prime Miinister Manmohan Singh Tuesday said he would not quit over the perceived undermining of his authority and that of his cabinet by Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, noting differences of viewpoints was "what a democracy is about".

But he said that the "onslaught" of BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi needed to be met by "all secular forces" and "one will have to wait for some time before the people realise what they are up against".

He also sought to put an end to mounting speculation that he may resign after the public trashing by Gandhi of a ordinance that sought to shield convicted lawmakers from disqualification, saying "there was no question of resigning."

Manmohan Singh said he will try to "find out the reasons" why Rahul Gandhi had protested in "that way".

Asked whether Gandhi should have raised the issue of ordinance while he was away in the US, the prime minister said: "Well I am not the master of what people say. It has happened, and as I said when I go back I will try to find out the reasons why it had to be done that way and how do we handle it."

To a question whether he was upset by the public denunciation of the ordinance passed by the cabinet last week, he said: "I think, I have been used to ups and downs and I don't get easily upset."

The prime minister was speaking to reporters on board his special aircraft while returning from his US visit.

Gandhi, at a press conference, had rubbished the ordinance, saying that it was "complete nonsense" and should be "torn up and thrown away".

The remark had created a political storm, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) saying that the prime minister should step down if he had any self-respect left.

The prime minister said the ordinance was discussed twice by the cabinet and also by the Congress core group, the party's top decision-making body.

The ordinance was seen to be a way of saving Congress leader Rasheed Masood and strong ally Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad ahead of their final court hearing in corruption cases. Both have been convicted.

President Pranab Mukherjee had withheld his assent to the ordinance after the cabinet passed it Sep 24, a day before Manmohan Singh left for his five-day US visit. Mukherjee had summoned some union ministers over it.

Asked whether the government was planning to junk the controversial ordinance, the prime minister said: "We will see which way the wind blows."

The cabinet is meeting Wednesday to discuss the ordinance.

Asked whether any person, however, senior should undermine the decisions taken by the cabinet and core group, he said: "No, I don't feel that way" as they were operating in a democracy and not in an authoritarian state.

"I honestly feel that if there is an important point of view, any member of the Congress Party, any member of my cabinet is free to raise issues and require reconsideration of issues.

"I think that's what a democracy is about... therefore my humble feeling is that when a point of view has been expressed, we must sit together and understand what is agitating the mind of the person who has raised these issue and that's what we will do."

Gandhi had written to Manmohan Singh after his outburst, saying he has high respect for the prime minister but he wanted to convey his conviction about the ordinance to him.

He said Gandhi has asked for a meeting and he will discuss the matter with him.

Manmohan Singh said he would take his cabinet colleagues into confidence.

Story of Sacrifice of PM post by Soniaji is just a bundle. Because she went to meet President APJ Abdul Kalam fully armed with support letters from all allies and resolution of her Congress party ing her as PM candidate and all preparations were done by Party to anoint her as PM. But the clarification asked by President kalam about her dual Citizenship created big Legal hurdle and hence she backtracked and nominated MMS for that Post.
People say Tippu Sultan sacrificed his life for India's freedom. But in fact he had to give his life because he had Killed lakhs of his own Indians in Kerala, Coorg and Coastal Karnataka. But still his death is glorified as sacrifice just like sacrifice of Soniaji.

Sorry, before Rahul speak (outburst) BJP gave memorandum to President requesting not to pass the bill! In fact Rahul's outburst is because everyone was opposing. Even in CVC appointment BJP opposed and then supreme court cancelled the appointment. That is the reason we are claiming BJP has experienced politicians.

The entire BJP wants Dr. Manmohan Singh to resign except their new member Dr. Subramanya Swamy, who says that he did a favour on India by not resigning. At least one brainy fellow joined BJP after a long time. He also admits former congress PM- P.V.N.R. is the one who saved India from bankruptcy but not without taking some credit for himself.
It is not just BJP but the entire political system in India has it in them demanding resignation for anything and everything. GOD, only you can change our country.

Dear Mr. Sunil Nelson D'souza, Udupi/Dubai,

I am a nationalist. Indian national and Christian by birth.

Many riots were happened and all those riots were carried out by the BJP, RSS, the VHP, AND ABHINAV BHARAT INCLUDING SIKH RIOTS 1984.
Congress never proposed any rioter person for Prime Minister’s post.

Whenever the BJP comes to power the first thing they do was their dirty habit of catching Christians because Christians are easy target.

    1) GUJARAT : BJP THE AMUL-TEA-BOY CAME TO POWER AND FIRST HE DID WAS THE ATROCITIES AGAINST CHRISTIANS.
    A) ATROCITIES AGAINST MUSLIMS AND DESTRUCTION OF THEIR HOUSES AND RAPING OF WOMEN.
    B) KARNATAKA: FIRST THEY ATTACKED THE CHURCHES AND SLAPPED CASES AGAINST PROTESTING CHRISTIANS AND INNOCENT CHRISTIANS. REMEMBER ALL THOSE 3 DAYS THE BJP AND ITS ASSOCIATES ATTACKED CHRUCHES AND ABUSED CHRISTIANS AND IN 3 DAYS THEY NEVER PUT 144 SECTION OR CURFEW TO STOP CHURCH ATTACKERS.
    C) MADHA PRADESH: THEY HAVE BEATEN OUR PRIESTS AND PASTORS BRINGING THEM ON THE ROADS AND THE LAW WAS IN THE HANDS OF THUGS AND LOOTERS.
    D) ORISSA – BJP AND BJDL WERE JOINTLY RULING AND FIRST THE BJP AND ITS ASSOCIATES HAVE DONE WAS MASSACRE OF CHRISTIANS, RAPING OF NUNS AND DESTROYING MORE THAN 45,000 CHRISTIAN HOUSES.

I dont understand why an issue is made about the PM resigning. The BJP forms their own understanding and then comes to their own conclusion. The make a mountain out of a molehill. There are a million issues to focus on for the growth of the nation other than running down the ruling party . They weigh every single word and then run down whatever the congress party says or does. Weird lot!!! Why do they focus on petty matters. Who the L are they to dictate what needs to be done. They are the uneducated fighting lot. Shame on them. Make an issue for nothing at all. They just want to give congress wrong publicity, and Congress is decent not to fight back and lower themselves.

When did Congress nominate RG as PM candidate ? You are jumping to conclusion just as Sushma Swaraj did - she said she would eat roasted grams, sleep on naked floor and so on if Sonia Gandhi becomes PM. Well she has to pray for widowhood to bring all that in practice, Congress is not giving that honor to her.

A much bitter pill that the opposition cannot swallow is that Sonia Gandhi as well as her son renounced PM post. Congress has abundant well educated members to grace suitable positions - the opposition will get no chance to criticize the party for giving ministerial berths to Gandhi family members.

Never mind - you are a guest - you are welcome to leave if you don't like the rules and regulations - I quite agree with it.

Now, I want you to scroll down and read a comment from a reader with whom I was arguing tooth and nail to convince him that Christian Institutions in Mangalore did not engage in converting their students but contributed towards the development of the society - do you know what we the non-Hindus were told ? No, its not Indian V/s NRI - I have full faith in what PC said - Indian economy was strengthened especially because of remittances from abroad.

I compared development just because you brought up the topic. You hoped change from Congress will bring development in comparison with other nations.

You are yet to reply me about a party that (you say) would bring development. Like corruption, development too doesn't reside with one party. The party you are suggesting instead discriminates, looks down upon and pounces on a chance to degrade other religions.
I told you why I am for a particular party because it treats every citizen of India with equality and respect.

To all the Modi fans of this country, here is a latest report on the development of Gujarat. Quote: The Raghuram Rajan Committee report says that Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Jharkhand are the most backward states in India and Gujarat is 'less developed.'The Committee was set up former chief economic advisor Rajan to categorize states according to their developmental indices, which will be used to allocate appropriate funds by the Centre to the states. The report also found Goa, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu as the most advanced states in the country. The report also stated that Gujarat, touted as a highly urbanized state by chief minister Narendra Modi, is in fact 'less developed.' Modi has been chanting the mantra of the 'Gujarat Model' to promote his prime ministerial aspirations.
The list categorizes Punjab, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand and Haryana as 'relatively developed' states. Unquote.

Modi is the darling of media and is exaggerating the factual figures for his own self interest. Modi's utterances of late need to be carefully watched and people of this great country need to be vigilant on his destructive policies.

Gujarat is one of top 10 states with regard to crime & corruption unfortunately it doesn’t come in front of media (because of money & political power).
Gujarat was wealthy state even before FEKU became CM there (even Advani admitted it openly). Most of the leading businessmen of the nation are from this state & they all are self-developed. They never rely on Govt.
Also some leading Corporate houses in Gujarat are spending lot of money on FAKU & doing free marketing for him & highlighting him in the name of development, for their personal benefits. Let FEKU become PM, then you will see FEKU dancing to the tunes of wealth business tycoons.

Mr.PM, whether Modi should become prime minister or not that people of India will decide, but you should think about taking rest after 2014 elections. Day by day you are becoming a laughing stock!

It is not the monpoly of only Gujaratis to comment about Modi. Any Indian can comment and my/our opinion is different from a section of Gujaratis in Mumbai which is what I have stated.
May I also bring to your notice that not all Gujarati Hindus in Mumbai support Modi.

There used to be a time when Dr. Subramaniam Swamy used to tell how MMS hijacked the reforms of 1993 and got the undue credit for saving the economy whereas in reality it was the vision of PVNR that took us through the tumultuous situation and I never believed him, but now the true colors of MMS are out. MMS wasn't, but now is and will be a bad guy in my eyes in the future.

MMS does not understand that no one is bothered what he feels about it. Whether he feels ashamed or proud to be called nonsense is none of our business. He is loyal to family and what he does is his business. What he does not understand, probably forgotten is the he is also Prime Minister of India. We cannot see PM office being demeaned like this. Every kid cannot suddenly come and kick PM? Call him nonsense?
