Delhi schoolboy accidentally injured by javelin

New Delhi, Oct 2 (IANS): A Class 6 student was critically injured here after he was struck in the ear by a stray javelin on the school ground, police said Wednesday.

Raushan Lama, a student of Government Boys Senior Secondary School in south Delhi, was on the school ground Tuesday when a misdirected javelin thrown by a Class 12 student hit him, causing a deep wound on his ear, police said.

According to a classmate, Lama tried to save his two companions when the javelin hit him.

"The javelin was thrown by a Class 12 student. They were practicing in the ground. Lama saw the javelin coming towards us. He pulled me but it hit his left ear," Lama's classmate told IANS.

"A senior student rushed to the principal and apprised him about the matter. We were asked to get back to class but a few minutes later, the school got over," he said.

Police said Lama was rushed to Majeedia Hospital from where doctors referred him to AIIMS (All India Institute Of Medical Sciences) Trauma Centre. Doctors said his condition was critical.

Police questioned students and teachers. A case of negligence was registered.

"I got a call from the school principal around 5 p.m. He told me to reach hospital. Upon reaching, I found my son bleeding profusely. After giving first aid, doctors referred him to AIIMS," said father Suraj Bhan Lama, who is a driver.

A Delhi education department official said the school's sports teacher's contract has been cancelled. He added a two-member committee will inquire the incident.
