Dubai March 11: It was March 10th,2006 and the venue was Al Maskan conference hall Karama Dubai, most suitable and popular for Poetry kind of events. Kavita trust led by Melvyn Rodrigues was the organiser and five handpicked poets / poetess were the centre of attraction and handful of Konkani poetry lovers were the audience. Time - between 4.30pm and  7.00pm on Friday.

The day was to remember, People may have thought that poetry is only for intelligent and people of alike. But it was proved wrong when a poetry session was presented with full of talents, humour and meaning.

Dinesh Correa, who is known for his dynamic journalism and high-class poems, was the leader. Violet Pereira, Robert Fernandes, Pius James, and Remsy Fernandes are the other Pariticipants.

These poets made a milestone by introducing new kind of session.

The event was divided into four sessions -first one being five participants presenting best of their poems, with charismatic style of reading poems. The audience was in great mood; perhaps it was a perfect weekend to spend with some quality programme.

Second session was more interesting and first of it kinds. For their own lyrics, participants picked some popular tunes of Wilfy Rebimbus, Jerome D`Souza, Eric Ozario and even Shankar Ehsan Loy and Vishal of Hindi. Presentation was wonderful and full of fun. Every poem had its own message and meaning. The session was nothing short of any kind of musical nite. At some point it was not even reminded that it's a poetry session.

Participants gave full life to the poems and sung their with own creativity with full of heart.
 

"This is not easy, we have spent more than 5 practicing sessions in last month to organise this session" said Dinesh Correa later to this correspondent.

"For any kind of nite, singers, musicians prepare a lot, they organise practicing session. Our session was too similar we have prepared a lot ourselves" he said.

The third session was more interesting as Dinesh Correa wrote the first line of each stanza of a poem and other participants on the dias had to complete create other three lines, with the true meaning, rhythm and rhyme. It was a highly successful round, and every participant without period notice and practice on the spot created some fantastic phrases and gave a life to poem. The creativity was at its best. The audience was on full charge.

Final session, again participants contributed their favorite poems.

Earlier, Melvyn Rodrigues, mastermind of this event gave a brief introduction of the event by mentioning how the poetry was in the Gulf about 10 years back and now how it has reached.

With huge round of appaulauds he said, "More than 100 new poets have emerged since last couple of years and all new talents doing tremendous job towards the progress of Konkani poetry." He aso said that his first ever album 'Dini Dini' is sold beyond expectation and already raised over Rs200,000 towards Kavitaa trust.

He gave a credit to the all those people who work for Konkani cause specially organizations in the UAE who promotes Konkani culture and tradition.

Hemacharya, convener of Daijidubai writers' forum was the guest honour. In his message to the audience, he shared his experience with Cha Fra D'Costa, known as father of Konkani poetry. He declared, "If anyone is around in Konkani after Cha Fra. it is Melvyn Rodrigues, a poet par excellence, who has left no stone unturned to bring the poetry to the limelight".

Dayan D`Souza, recent award of winner of Daijidubai, speaking to this correspondent said, "The Konkani poetry has entered into a new direction. We need more such events to attract common people. This is equivalent to any other entertainment form".  He gave praise to the participants of today's session.

It is heartening to witness new development and enthusiasm among people towards Konkani poetry.
