Mumbai, Oct 11: The last rites of Michael Leo Serrao (58) who was employed in Mumbai’s Hot Sip bar in Bhayandar and expired on Sunday, October 6 due to heart failure, were held at the Christian cemetery at Mira road on Thursday, October 10.

The religious rites were led by Fr Michael Moraes with guidance of parish priest Fr Dominic Vas of St Joseph Church.

The mortal remains of Michael Serrao were kept in the morgue of Borivli east’s Bhagavathi hospital for the last four days after registering a police case in Borivli east MHB colony police station waiting for the relatives of the deceased for come forward for the burial.

Rons Bantwal, journalist and social worker took the initiative to contact Fr Fernandes of Mundkoor Jarigekatte Fathima church to which parish the deceased originally belonged and Fr Paul Pinto of Kiren church for the birth certificate of the deceased.

Although Michael was a bachelor and had five brothers and a sister, none of them came forward for his burial.

However hotel owner Ravindra Shetty and Udaya Shetty employers of the deceased, had asked Ron Bantwal to conduct the burial as per Catholic religious customs.  Fr Vas had provided coffin for the purpose, free of charge.

A true secular brotherhood and spirit. In life, mostly we share, care and extend our helping hand only to our relatives. We never even care for a close neighbor who is in need of emergency help rather. Own siblings turn down on a dead body!
India is shining with this true secular spirit. One hand politicians sow the seed of communal thinking for their vote bank, other side common citizens, Hindu Muslim brothers reach out to bid adieu to a Catholic mortal remains in Church which was discarded by own blood relatives. 'Indeed my India is shining'. Hats off my brothers and sister.
