Man gets six-year jail for China airport blast

Beijing, Oct 15 (IANS): A 34-year-old man in China has been sentenced to six years in jail for setting off a homemade bomb which, he said, was "meant to draw public attention" at the Beijing Capital International Airport in July.

The wheelchair-bound, Ji Zhongxing, was detained after his bomb -- made out of fireworks -- went off outside the arrival hall at Terminal 3 on the evening of July 20, the China Daily reported Tuesday. The blast injured Ji in the left arm and caused minor injuries to a police officer.

Denying the prosecution's charge that he intended to commit suicide or harm others, Ji said all he "wanted was to draw public attention" through the explosion.

The court, however, said the man set off the explosion intentionally. He "concealed the bomb to escape a security check" and "held the bomb firmly" after police arrived.
