Seven drown in Zambian boat accident


Lusaka, Oct 19 (IANS): Seven people, including a child, drowned while as many swam to safety when a boat they were riding in capsized on a lake in Zambia's Luapula province, police said Friday.

The boat, while moving from one Island to another on Lake Mweru, which is shared with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), capsized due to strong winds, reported Xinhua citing a Zambian police spokesperson.

Four of the deceased were Zambians while three were Congolese nationals, the official said, adding that the boat, was coming from Kilwa Island when it met strong winds and capsized.

All bodies were later retrieved from the lake.
