Lalu violates jail manual, faces threat: Police

Ranchi, Oct 20 (IANS): RJD president and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad, sentenced to five years in jail in a fodder scam case, faces security threats as he leads a life of comfort as a prisoner, Jharkhand Police has said.

The special branch of Jharkhand Police has alerted the jail administration about Lalu Prasad's security. "Lalu Prasad may face a security threat, and should be given adequate security in the jail," an official of the special branch said, expressing concern.

Lalu Prasad has been kept in the upper division of the jail, where he is separated from other prisoners. He has also been provided all facilities extended to VIP prisoners -- a separate bedroom, a mosquito net, cot and other facilities. There is also a TV set in the cell, and he is allowed to watch Doordarsan news and read newspapers every day.

"Jail authorities have been asked to keep a proper vigil on the security of Lalu Prasad. We have also informed police in Ranchi about the need for heightened external security of the jail," a source from the Birsa Munda Central Jail told IANS.

Jail sources say there are two counts on which security for the former Bihar chief minister is a concern: First, he receives many high-profile visitors; second, Maoists are among the prisoners in the jail.

The jail sources say scores of people meet Lalu Prasad each day. Some visitors are high-profile, like Jharkhand Tourism Minister Suresh Paswan and Water Resources Minister Annapurna Devi, who belong to the Rashtriya Janata Dal.

The RJD is a partner in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-led coalition government of Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

Former union minister and Ranchi Congress Lok Sabha MP Subodh Kant Sahay was also among those calling on Lalu Prasad in jail.

Lalu Prasad reportedly spends a few hours each day in the chamber of the jailor, meeting people and discussing various matters. He is also reported to have issued some jail officials veiled threats.

A Public Interest Litigation has been filed against the comforts that Lalu Prasad is allowed in jail.

"As per the jail manual, relatives can meet a prisoner once in 15 days. Jail manual 1001 says there should be no political discussion in the jail. Lalu Prasad meets around 100 people, including political leaders, everyday. He holds political discussions in jail," said Rajiv Kumar, the lawyer who filed the PIL.

    The accused who has been convicted and undergoing imprionment in jail should be dealt like an accused and like Chief Minister. If Lalu violates jail manual proper action should be taken against him. Why he should be given such kind of leniency to meet 100 people in a day. What business the criminals have got to meet his quests instead of sitting in his jail room?

    VISITORS SHOULD BE RESTRICTED TO SOME TIMINGS AND JAIL INMATES SHOULD BE TREATED LIKE OTHERS IRRESPECTIVE OF HIS POSITION OR OTHERWISE WILL IT BE CALLED DEMO CRAZY ?
    AFTER ALL THOSE WHO VISIT HIM EXCEPT RELATIVES AT THIS MOMENT ARE MORE OR LESS OF THAT CATAGORY.
    A CRIMINAL HAS BEEN ALLOWED ALL THESE YEARS AS A LAW MAKER IS THE HEIGHT OF DEMO CRAZY.

    In a prison inmates are prisoners.whatever the reason and the Person.It should be so.otherwise what is the difference between outside and inside the prison.?Here he seems to be well looked after .and the visitors,should they not have permission from authorities?And the authorities can deny .also why this fuss about his security?He himself and the authority in the jail trying to get more comfort I think.He should think why he is there what he did .no Need to make fuss.certainly People are also angry.He should behave as a prisoner and not as a Minister.

    Democracy works only if people understand who the "Boss" is and that elected officials are mere "servants" of the people. Active participation and involvement is key for Democracy to function and thrive. Enforcing the rule of law for all, equally. Otherwise, it will fail as is happening in India right now. Goons, thugs and criminals are ruling the country. For most people "politics" is a bad word, unfortunately. Indian Parliament has become a bastion for elected criminals!!

    Country's only hope for a turnaround is Narendra Modi. Hope he wins the upcoming election and becomes PM.

    Don't you all think this a great joke?
    A man is found guilty of massive fraud, with crores of Government money siphoned off and jailed as a criminal, having gala, more than 5-star hotel treatment in JAIL!!!! And it is a open secret!!!
    And that State Government nor the authority who jailed him can not do anything about this but supply whatever required for this criminal's comfort!!!!
    In Karnataka, Jail authorities Modi-fy prison cells, food supply, internet\mobile availability for criminals of the same category.
    Is it that no one can question the Jail authorities and take action against them for providing these comforts only for a few criminals? These jail authorities even allow the criminals to roam outside in the town\city!!!

    As it is they have eaten so much of tax payers money and on top of that they are allowed to eat more and more of TPMoney, by spending for their comforts in jail!!

    These Modi-fications are done only for the comforts of criminal politicians and rich people only...

    This is India ! Laloo's Popularity has gone up by 2% after his imprisonment due to sympathy factor, which shows for Indian voters Honesty is of no importance at all. So, how can such voters ever elect honest politicians ? India is bound to be ruled by only dishonest people for another 100 years.
