Lalu Prasad, Jagdish Sharma disqualified from Lok Sabha

New Delhi, Oct 22 (IANS): Lalu Prasad and Jagdish Sharma were Tuesday disqualified from the Lok Sabha following their conviction in the fodder scam, a Lok Sabha Secretariat official said.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad, an MP from Bihar's Saran district, and Janata Dal (United) MP Jagdish Sharma from Jahanabad in Bihar are the first Lok Sabha members to be disqualified after the Supreme Court order.

The July 10 verdict of the apex court mandated immediate disqualification from parliament and state legislatures of lawmakers convicted for criminal offences punishable with a jail term of more than two years.

Congress leader Rasheed Masood was Monday disqualified from the Rajya Sabha, following his conviction in a corruption case.

On Sep 30, a Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Court convicted Lalu Prasad, Jagdish Sharma and others in a case of fraudulent withdrawal of Rs.37.70 crore from Chaibasa treasury in the then undivided Bihar during 1994-95 when Lalu Prasad was the chief minister.

Special CBI Judge Pravas Kumar Singh sentenced Lalu Prasad to five years' imprisonment and slapped a Rs.25 lakh fine to him.

The RJD chief is lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi, the Jharkhand capital where the special CBI court tried and convicted him.

Hence forth address them with respect as Lalooji Prasadji or Jadishji Sharmaji, just like our Cong people address Yasinji Bhatkalji or Osamaji Bean Ladanji.
Going to jail in India increases respect in the society.

In spite of best efforts made by UPA and Congress not to disqualify the guilty politicians, Lalu and Rasheed Masood have been out of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha! Indian public should celebrate this event with great joy. I would like to see more politicians from Karnataka and U P going to prison and staying there for a long time. India can certainly survive without these three-penny worth persons. Shame on those who tried to protect them.

3 wickets gone. Few more will go!

Lalu is Hero No. 1. Apart from all his achievements he created the history by being first MP from Lok sabha to be disqualified.

Second innings that begins in 2014 wont be smooth for many.
Indeed it is a good beginning for the country to cleanse the system.

From now on, treat them in jail like ordinary jail inmates. No more VIP status. Let them enjoy the real jail life so that other ministers and so called VIPs will also learn a lesson!

It is really a refreshing news that Lalu Prasad and Jagdish Sharma are disqualified from Lok Sabha. This has happened because of the SC court's ruling. Slowly but surely the changes are sweeping the country. Every legislator who is convicted for his crimes against the society should be disqualified irrespective of his/her affiliation to political parties. Today the legislators are behaving like lords and masters, who are supposed to serve the people. They are law unto themselves and think they are above law. We should be thankful to Supreme Court for this judgement/ruling. There are many skeletons in the cupboard and one by one will tumble out in due course.
