Woman consumes poison after tiff over 'Karwa Chauth'

New Delhi, Oct 22 (IANS): A woman consumed a poisonous substance Tuesday after a heated argument with her husband over "Karwa Chauth", a day-long fast kept by Hindu women for the long life and well being of their husbands, police said.

Mahesh, 39, consumed the poisonous substance at her house in east Delhi's Kalyanpuri when her husband, Vijay, 42, allegedly beat her up for not observing the "Karwa Chauth" fast.

Neighbours informed the police when they found the woman with froth coming out of her mouth after her daughter raised an alarm.

"The woman was rushed to the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where her condition is stated to be out of danger," said a police officer.

Vijay has been arrested.
