Seven killed in Iraq suicide bomb attack

Baghdad, Oct 23 (IANS): At least seven people were killed Wednesday in a suicide bomb attack which targeted the Iraqi police in Iraq's western province of Anbar, a provincial police source said.

The attack occurred in the morning when a suicide bomber drove an explosives-packed truck into a police checkpoint on a bridge near the city of Rutba, some 370 km west of the Iraq's capital Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The huge blast destroyed part of the bridge on the highway outside Rutba, and killed four policemen and three truck drivers who were crossing the bridge, the source said.

The city was the scene of deadly suicide attacks late Tuesday night when dozens of gunmen and suicide bombers attacked security checkpoints in and around the city, killing at least 12 security members and wounding 20 others.

Insurgent attacks continue in the volatile Sunni Arab area west of Baghdad that stretches through Anbar province to Iraq's western borders with Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
