Actress Shweta Menon withdraws molestation case against Congress MP

Updated

Kollam, Nov 3 (IANS): After two days of standing her ground, popular Malayalam film actress Swetha Menon has withdrawn her complaint against Congress MP Peethamabara Kurup for allegedly groping her.

In an email to the media late Sunday evening, she said she was not interested in pursuing her complaint and was not going ahead with any legal steps, in the wake of repeated apologies by Kurup, which has been accepted.

The email states she took this step after consulting her guru, father, husband and not under any pressure.

In the email, she thanked all the support that was extended to her from the media and others.

Reacting to the turn of events, CPI-M Rajya Sabha member T.N. Seema said that the decision was hers.

“The fact of the matter is the way in which the Congress party reacted very harshly towards her at her time of distress,” said Seema, who had gone to the extent of asking Kurup to resign in the wake of a case being registered against him.

Kurup, however, is yet to react to the turn of events.

She made this volte face after giving her statement to the Kollam Police Sunday morning about her grievances of how she was treated.

Following this, the Kollam Police was forced to register a case against Kurup.

Soon after giving her statement, she and her family left for Bangalore.

In the evening, angry Youth Congress workers in Kollam district of Kerala burnt an effigy of Menon after reports that police registered a case against Kurup.

Shouting slogans against the actress, party activists walked through the main road in Kollam and warned they would continue their protests against her.

"She is one woman who, in a Malayalam film ("Kallimannu"), allowed scenes of the delivery (of a baby) to be shot," said a Youth Congress leader while addressing the activists.

"Yes, the police have registered a case, and that is as it should be. I'm happy that the police have taken up a case. Now, I will deal with it in the legal way," Kurup, a member of the Lok Sabha, told reporters after hearing the news that a case under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent of outraging her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code was registered against him.

Earlier Sunday, the Kollam District Congress Committee rallied in support of Kurup.
The actress alleged the lawmaker tried to grope her during a boat race in Kollam Friday, where she was one of the guests of honour.

Saturday, she showed the "visuals" from TV channels, where the lawmaker was shown getting close to her during the boat race.

The withdrawal comes at a time when the actress was planning to meet Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Tuesday, to file an official complaint.

"There was a huge crowd, and in a crowded place, some jostling happens. She complained after almost six hours. Nothing of the sort happened, as she claims," district Congress president Pratapa Varma Thampan said.

Kurup, who was also present at the conference with Thampan, did not speak much. He said he had already had a word with the actress and her husband.

"I do not wish to speak much, because the police is investigating the case," Kurup said.

Meanwhile Ayisha Potti, a CPI-M legislator from the district, registered a complaint with district collector B. Mohanan through an SMS.

Mohanan has been facing flak, as the actress has claimed that she spoke to him immediately after the incident. The official, however, has denied that the actress approached him.

Mohanan responded to the CPI-M legislator's SMS, and asked the district police chief to make a detailed report of the incident.

"Both the chief minister and the home minister have failed to do their duty in taking quick action. Safety of women is a big issue in the state, and they are silent," CPI-M politburo member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said.

The actress has alleged that the lawmaker tried to grope her during a boat race in Kollam Friday, where she was one of the guests of honour.

On Saturday, she showed the "visuals" from TV channels, where the lawmaker was shown getting close to her during the boat race.

A team of four police officials from Kollam visited Swetha Menon Sunday at her flat here and recorded her statement of the sequence of events Friday.

After about 90 minutes, the police team left the house, but refused to divulge details to waiting reporters. The actress also refused to engage with the media and left for Bangalore with her family.

Sources close to the actress said she would also meet Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Tuesday, to file an official complaint.

"There was a huge crowd, and in a crowded place, some jostling happens. She complained after almost six hours. Nothing of the sort happened, as she claims," district Congress president Pratapa Varma Thampan said.

"Both the chief minister and the home minister have failed to do their duty in taking quick action. Safety of women is a big issue in the state, and they are silent," CPI-M politburo member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said.

Kurup, meanwhile, is reportedly seeking legal opinion to see if he needs to apply for anticipatory bail.

Police record statement of actress in 'molestation' case

Kochi, Nov 3 (PTI): Leading Malayalam film actress Shweta Menon, who was allegedly molested by Congress MP N Peethambara Kurup at the President's Boat race event at Kollam two days back, today gave her statement on the incident to police.

A police team from Kollam, including a woman Circle Inspector arrived here at 9 AM and recorded Shweta's statement at her residence. The actress reportedly broke down while the statement was being recorded.

The police team refused to disclose the details.

Shweta is understood to have mentioned the names of two persons, including Kollam MP Kurup, who has denied the charge.

Last night Shweta had told reporters after meeting office bearers of various film industry bodies that she would send a detailed complaint to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, whom she is likely to meet on Tuesday.

Her statement was recorded by police on a complaint by DYFI, the youth wing of CPI(M).

Shweta has so far not named her tormentor, saying all details are in the complaint and she was pained that Collector B Mohan had "ignored" her charge when informed about it.

To this, Mohan had said she had not given any complaint, either orally or in writing.

He said he had ordered Kollam City Police Commissioner to enquire into the incident following an SMS complaint from Aisha Potti, MLA.

Shweta had also rejected Kurup's contention that the charge was politically motivated and said she would not back out from her complaint.

The incident has triggered strong protests from the film fraternity and women's outfits deploring 'failure' of the authorities to act against the MP.

While 73-year-old Kurup termed the charge as untrue,Shweta had said she stood by whatever she had stated on the incident that allegedly occurred at the venue of the President's Trophy boat race. TV footage showed the MP moving towards the actress and touching her.

Chandy had told reporters at Kottayam yesterday he had not received any complaint from the actress so far and that appropriate action would be taken after investigation if a complaint was received.

    to downgrade Congress MP.

Already someone has informed all of you where the highest number of rapes\molestations happen. It's the ill effect of watching live nude shows\rave parties and watching blue films even in a sacred place like Government Assembly house.
Very low on moral and trying to blow up a couple of cases from other political parties.

Fekus can ever be truthful? Never.

right now people are so tired of listening to Feku's fake speeches\fake data, there is sudden lull in comments of praise for Feku. Slowly all that is fake will be known to all.

You are taking advantage of being a women. You ask your conscience, do you have professional ethics? You would go to any extent for publicity and money.

And those who do not know about this female, the only lady in India perhaps who allowed to shoot (picture) her labor (child birth) for a film. I doubt any decent lady will undress and show her private parts even to the medical staff attending her delivery.

Is this a big story, in a crowd, an elderly person's hand was unknowingly got touched to hers? Come on... Be rational.

Congress is a "kai" party. They put "hand" everywhere! First they put hand in the till (money box) to get share of public funds, and now putting hand on woman to touch at inappropriate places.

I had seen few of her movies. If someone accidentally or deliberately touches her in the middle of the crowd whats big deal in that? She's not raped in public right? Why is she making it big? Hasn't she touched by any till date? She is creating this to be in the news i suppose..If she's a respectable woman she should've ignored, & shouldn't have given importance to this silly thing!

This is not a political issue of BJP or Congress or any other party. This act is shameful, sinful and punishable by law. The concerned MP must be tried and punished if guilty.

Highest number of rapes happen in MP,UP ,Bengal ectc .As per statistics recent congress ruled states have less crime rate against women compared to other state.Eveyone know UP and MP is under non congress Government since many years.Strange few people make politics out of everything and because of this these actress go for free negetive publicity .All knows actor or actress are known for acting and it is easy for them to creat Drama.

If the said person touched her intentionally, then it must be called as molestation whether he is a young man or BUDDA no doubt on it.

Here my question is how a high profile's small issue is highlighing in the national level, why don't the serious issues like Saujanya case murmering within the state only???Why can't media highlight such issues in the national level so that justice wouldn't be delayed!

When former Karnataka MLAs’ watched blue film in Karnataka Assembly Hall, almost all Congi Cultured Well Educated Intellectual people commented like anything. But now though it is in Kerala but none of them awake or willing to make any comments when it happens in reality by Congi MLA? So, are they were talking about culture or vulture? Very good Congissss Keep it up and Keep going….. for few more months and then you will find “Dead End”

As per statistics condition of women in Congress ruled states are better than Other party ruling state.its not about party its about actress intension for free publicity.Again people just hate congress and want to give free publicity to BJP simply comments on everything.None of the Congress supporter never give free publicity.Congress supporter are matured voters and they what is fact.Afterall Bengal,Tamilnadu,MP,Gujarat,UP is ruled by non Congress governments more than decade and in these states condtion of women is not good compared to other states.
