'Patel would not have recognised Modi as ideological heir'

New Delhi, Nov 4 (PTI): Amid a slugfest between BJP's Narendra Modi and Congress over Sardar Patel, a noted biographer of Patel has said the country's first home minister would not have recognised Modi as his ideological heir and been very "pained" with his behaviour towards Muslims.

Rajmohan Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi who has written a biography of the country's first home minister, said Patel certainly would not have felt at the time of 2002 riots in Gujarat that Modi fulfilled his 'rajdharma', a phrase used by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to chide Modi.

"I think it is quite obvious that he (Patel) would have been very disappointed, very pained and saddened not only as an Indian statesman but also as coming from Gujarat, that this should not have happened in Gujarat and the government of the time was not able to prevent it," he said.

Talking to Karan Thapar in CNN-IBN's Devil's Advocate, Gandhi said that claims by BJP supporters or Modi himself to project him as Patel's heir misunderstands and misrepresents Patel.

"If Modi can grow into that kind of image that would be wonderful, but by two reasons he has fallen short. After all Patel grew as a disciple under the umbrella of Gandhi and the Indian National Congress. Modi had his career under the umbrella of RSS and that makes a difference.

"Also Patel as an individual was always a team builder, other people were prominent in his daily life. Whether Modi is like that... I would like him to be like that," he said.

Gandhi, however, accepted the criticism that Congress has forgotten Patel or relegated him to the background in the 63 years since his death.

He noted that Nehru was succeeded by Indira Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and now Rahul Gandhi while none of Patel's children inherited or benefited from his power.

Patel was proud to be a Congressman and accepted that Mahatma Gandhi's decision to make Nehru Prime Minister was correct, Gandhi said, adding the Mahatma chose Nehru over Patel because he was older by 14 years and in poor health.

Nehru was also better known internationally, he said.

The 'Iron man', a popular term used for Patel, had appreciated the work of RSS during riots in 1947 but after Gandhi's assassination, his attitude changed and he was thereafter an implacable opponent if not an enemy of the Hindutva organisation, he said.

Modi and Congress leaders have engaged in a war of words over Patel with the BJP's PM candidate claiming that the country's destiny would have been different had he been the first PM instead of Nehru.

Congress has hit back at him, saying he was trying to hijack Patel's legacy as BJP lacked any icon.

Some comments of Sangh supporters here are clear indication how they have been brain washed in their Shakas about Indian History and father of nation of the country. These are the same people who will defend people like Nathuram Godse, Sadhvi Prajna.

They do not understand for what Gandhiji lived for. Just because he was secular (which is sickular as per these fundamentalists) and not in line with Sangh beliefs of fundamentalism they hate Gandhiji. We are lucky that majority of Indians are still with secular mindset eventhough many times efforts have been made to divide the people on the basis of religion. Vote bank appeasement of Hindus by these groups as protectors of Hindu religion have been so for rejected by majority of people.

We still have strong united India irrespective of religion or region because we still believe in principles of Mahatma. We all have to spread Gandhian principle through next generation and defeat the forces which are making every effort to take the nation in other direction.

Dear Mr. Ravi B Shenava, Mangalore
India lost for china with a humiliating defeat was because of:
    1) We were a new nation.
    2) No arms and ammunitions with us.
    3) Prime Minister Nehru was struggling to pay 50 Crores to Pakistan as dictated by M.K. Gandhi.
    4) Indian soldiers were fighting with china with swords and clubs.
Not because of Karan Thapar’s Father’s advise.

Indian soldiers were fighting with guns but were not sufficient and were fighting with swords and guns also.
Secondly I have said we were the newest nation with new in administration. Not like the NDA when Pakistan infiltrated in to Kargil nda knew and the NDA didn’t intervened to act upon immediately. After they occupied they woke up. And now you are speaking about 50 years before story…

So P N Thapar was forced to resign. Even then he was made Ambassador to Afganistan by Nehru. As the article suggest Patel was the unifying factor in making one India. He followed congress philosophy throughout his life and did not deviate from his path.

Some people find it convenient to use his name only for the political reasons and consider that by installing his statue they are doing great service to the country. These pracharaks (publicists) are experts in twisting history to suit them and trying best to rewrite the facts.

Sardar Patel was truthful to the country till his death and was completely different to the series of lies being told by the leader who considers himself as Avtar of Patel.

We cannot have another Sardar Patel but even if small fraction of his principles is followed that would be great service to the country.

Your BD Sena would have made big noise if the same happened in India what is happened in Australia, that is conversion. You are free in Dubai enjoying every moment of your life and at the same time increasing your Bank balance. Say thanks to your muslim brothers and Kings of Dubai who allowed person like you to stay in Dubai. Did you notice any disturbance in Dubai like your Bajrang Dal and Rama Sene pose threats to minorities in India? How can you say that you are tolerent. It's Muslims are tolerant and that is the reason you are there in Dubai.

Hindus, Christians, Muslims and Sikhs all together fought to achieve freedom and it was patience, perseverance and unity among all under the able leadership of Mahatma, we achieved the freedom. RSS never participated in freedom struggle. Instead they were informers to British and were responsible for many freedom fighters arrest. Nehru was powerful and more friendly than Sardar patel and was more close to Mahatma. That was the reason he was choosen as PM and no one has opposed that. Till today you people never remembered Sardar Patel and now elections have come now you need somebody to be named as freedom fighter from BJP as history show's that RSS never supported freedom struggle. Alas! it is your badluck once again, Sardar Patel belongs to Congress!

BJP in general and Modi in particular are opportunistic politicians. Patel is a towering personality with no parallel. Modi simply using that personality, to give a booster to his own image, at the election time. RSS is banned by Patel himself, he believed RSS is devisive. People say RSS is very much nationalistic and patriotic. Yudiyurappa, Halppa, Gadgari, Reddy bro's etc., were all associated with RSS, what happened to their patriotism, when milking the mother earth through illegal mining, land grabing etc. etc. How can Halppa get involved with rape case that involves his own friends wife? These are not one off incidents, these incidents are growing alarmingly many. One can safely therefore conclude, there is absolute shortage of morality and nationalism within RSS. I personally believe 90percent of political activists have only one thing in mind, that is either to make money or to get away from a criminal past, through politics. So, believing these politicians based on their words is going very much against the spirit of India itself.

What the Sangh Parivar did in Gujarat during 2002 riots was very disturbing. Such incident of open pogrom against the Muslim in Gujarat was not seen anywhere in a civilised society of an elected government. Under the guidance of Gujarat CM Modi, they killed innocent children, women, pregnant ladies, aged people and others by sadistic manners like chopping, slitting, burning, electrocuting and clubbing them to death.
Modi, hand stained with blood, is unfit to become a Prime Minister of India.
He hate Muslims and Christians of India as well as the world. He is hell bound to divide India in line with religion and wish to push the Muslims to the ghettos. Sorry, his ambition will not be fulfilled. He will pay for his deeds and in the coming Lok Sabha election suffer badly.

Since you have used whether Taliban type of mentality in Hindu or Christian or Muslim……. This is what people wanted to know that Taliban like mentality is nothing to do with any particular religion or caste or sect. Even you or me can become Talibani if we don’t respects humans especially women and children. Hindu in general or Christian in particular never opposed to women education or rights but whereas in other religion in some other part of the world still oppose for their rights. Even in Saudi, they still oppose to women driving the car!! We as a Hindu agreed with Mahatma to accommodate our fellow Indian Muslims whereas you might have seen what is happening in Pakistan and Bangladesh for Hindus. True sardar patel had said that RSS was responsible for the death of Mahatma Gandhi and they were spreading communal tensions. And in his letter to Golwalkar he had condemned the activities of RSS. But this was in response to allegations made on RSS regarding gandhis death. Later when he was the home minister in 1949 he himself passed a statement that on thorough investigation he has found that RSS had nothing to do with the Gandhi's death. And it was Sardar patel who had asked for RSS to be part of INC for the well being of the society.
He felt that is how we could involve the group members thereby limit their thinking on communal lines. But Nehru had defiantly opposed this. And it is also a known fact that Nehru and Sardar had a lot of differences between them which made Sardar say that he cant work in Congress with Nehru. That is when Gandhi interfered and tried to settle things with both of them in his last days. And it was sardar himself who had vociferously objected to a discussion on minority quota during the constitution meeting.
Thing is guys Sardar patel was one gem of a leader and people cant say he is only a congressmen. If Narendra modi wishes to incorporate his ideology no harm in that i mean a person can have lot of views to different issues. Doesnt mean we have to agree on all of those issues... Even Sardar had both positive as well as negative views on RSS. So congress people cant highlight only one of the letter sent by Patel. If thats the case they will have to look into flip side of the page as well. So as far as i see there was nothing wrong in Modi talking on sardar's legacy..

The statement from a common man of Gandhi dynasty.

Karan Thapar is more a follower of Gandhi family than a journalist.

Would not hinder Modiji's way of going towards his goal.

With due respects to Mahatma but this was the same Gandhi who refused to expel all Muslims from India though they were argued and fought for separate Country for Muslims but later on stayed back in India for unknown reasons. Let us keep NaMo issue set aside and ask this great Rajmohan Gandhi whether Mahatma was right or wrong for his one such decision and entire India pays dividend for the same. Let us take another classic mistake done by Mahatma by choosing Late Nehru was PM even though entire Parliament House favored Sardar Patel and now we can see fake Gandhis everywhere…….

Your xenophobic mentality is clearly reflected in your comments. You say the ''same Gandhi refused to expel all muslims'', but my dear please remember that only a few muslim leaders having the same divisive mentality as that of the RSS and Hindu Mahasabha, wanted a separate country and for this stupidity millions of hindus and muslims paid with their blood. Not all muslims wanted another country which is why they stayed behind. India is theirs as much as yours. India is not your personal fiefdom nor that of Modi or the RSS. Nobody wants a certificate on patriotism from you or the RSS or Modi. If Sardar Patel was alive today he would have buried all of you.

The British crook was actually Savarkar, who to escape time in prison compromised with them. Read history first and then distort it. First let us see if any one in the RSS or BJP has the guts to stand up and call the Mahatma a crook. India is free today because of him or else Sarvarkar and his descendents like you would still be sipping tea together with the British.
