Meghalaya, Nov 5: Tribal militants of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) are suspected to have ambushed five police personnel and killed them, while they were on their way to transfer a fellow militant who is on trial. They threw a grenade and then openly fired at the policemen killing five on the spot.
 
The police were on their way to Tura the headquarters of the West Garo Hills district to bring a prisoner about to face trial in Baghmara. They were believed to be in a group of 30 militants to attack the vehicle.
 
Meghalaya police believe these to be the retaliatory attacks as threatened by the outfit's chief upon the raid at his residence late last month. During the raid, police retrieved Indian and Bangladeshi currency along with satellite telephones and detonators. The security had been beefed up following this raid and the subsequent threat.
 
More people belonging to the GNLA also opened fire on villagers killing seven and injuring nine in Assam on Monday 4 November, 2013. Last year the GNLA killed over 35 people including security personnel in other districts of Garo Hills. The GNLA demand a seperate homeland for their people in the South Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.
